About Nomad Yarns by a regular customer
Nomad Yarns, located in an old Victorian house in Plainfield's downtown, is warm, cozy and crammed with delicious colorful yarns and great examples of projects. The owners, Erica and Dave Broughton, have created an inviting atmosphere where one feels more like a friend than a customer. It a wonderful place to take your time selecting yarn for your next project, relax and maybe even sit down to knit for a while. Yarns from well known brands line the shelves in addition to local yarns from Good for Ewe and indie-dyer Donna Jo Copeland. The store also stocks a wide range of needles and notions. Spinners and other fiber artists have not been left out as the store carries spinning equipment and fibers from large companies and local producers. You can even rent the drum carder in store for a modest fee. In addition to pattern books from yarn companies, the owners have also started their own self-designed collection of knitting patterns. The fun and original patterns are well-written with photos and clear instructions. A new pattern is featured each month as the project of the month kit which includes the pattern and yarn. The store hosts several crafting group at various times during the week, all are free and open to anyone. It's a great way to meet new friends, get advice from other fiber artists, and relax. Sometimes we even have refreshments and snacks! Regular formal classes and workshops are offered in the store in knitting, crocheting, felting, spinning and weaving. You can also schedule a private lesson for a technique or topic not already offered. Special events are held year round including the store's birthday in July, and the ever popular Santa Knits in September. I highly recommend dropping by to experience Nomad Yarns for yourself!
Spring Slouchy- by David Broughton
This is a great spring pattern, bright colorful and bold. Perfect for taking off the last of that chill in the air.
Materials:
2 Skeins Noro Tanabata US size 8 straights or circular needles. US size 10 dpn's or circular needles Size: Adult size with adjustable tab. Gauge: 13 sts in 4 inchs Stitch Dictionary: kfb - knit into the front and the back of the stitch. K2tog - knit 2 stitches together.
Instructions:
This hat is knit from the bottom up, working flat at the start to form the adjustable tab, then joining in the round to complete the main body. Using US size 8 needles, cast on 76 stitches. Knit 8 rows Bind off 6 stitches, this creates the tab (70 sts remain). Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of your round. Using US size 10 needles, join in the round, being careful not to twist and knit 1 round. To create the slouch for this hat, we will be increasing the number of stitches after the brim band. Increase round: (K9, Kfb) repeat to end of round (77 sts). Knit 30 rounds, or until your hat measures approximately 6 inches from the band (approx 7.5 inches from the cast on edge). If you want a super slouchy hat, knit until 7-9 inches from the band. Decreasing for top of hat: Round 1: (K9, K2tog) repeat to end of round (70 sts remain) Round 2 and all even number rounds: K Round 3: (K8, K2tog) repeat to end of round (63 sts remain) Round 5: (K7, K2tog) repeat to end of round (56 sts remain) Round 7: (K6, K2tog) repeat to end of round (49 sts remain) Round 9: (K5, K2tog) repeat to end of round (42 sts remain) Round 11: (K4, K2tog) repeat to end of round (35 sts remain) Round 13: (K3, K2tog) repeat to end of round (28 sts remain) Round 15: (K2, K2tog) repeat to end of round (21 sts remain) Round 17: (K1, K2tog) repeat to end of round (14 sts remain) Round 19: (K2tog) repeat to end of round (7 remain) Cut yarn, leaving at least 8 inches, and pass through remaining stitches.
