Spur-of-the-moment Baby Hat (aka Ruffled Baby Hat) by Little Sesame Knits
I remember seeing a very nice ruffled baby hat pattern somewhere online but couldnt find that link anymore, so I decided why not make up my own. This is actually very simple and will only take about an hour to make... an excellent project for that last minute shower gift or just to use up your leftover yarn. Have fun!

SIZE Newborn [Head Circumference: 14.5 inches]
MATERIALS
\* Less than 1 skein of Knitpicks Andean Silk in barn red [MC] Scraps of DK wool in light green [CC] \* US #7/4.5mm double pointed knitting needles and circular needles (if desired) $4.0\mathsf{m m}$ crochet needles \* Safety pin or ring marker
GAUGE
17.5 sts/21 rows $=4$ inches in Stockinette st Note: This pattern can be easily adapted for larger sizes and different gauge. Just measure up the head circumference of whom you are knitting for, multiply it by your gauge (to make the decreasing tidier this sum should be divisible by 8), then multiply the total number of stitches by 4 and this will be your number of cast on stitches. Your formula should look sometime like this: Head Circumference [e.g. 18 inches] $_x$ Gauge [e.g. 4.5 per inch] $=$ 81 sts. As this number should be divisible by 8, we'll round it down to 80.
DIRECTIONS
Hat
Using MC, CO 256 stitches [or your desired number], divide sts evenly between needles and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist. Place safety pin or split ring marker in work to indicate beginning of round. First Round: K2tog around [128 sts remaining or half of your total cast on sts] Second Round: K2tog around [64 sts remaining or a quarter of your total cast on sts ] Work in st st until work measures 3.5 inch [or your desired length] Decrease for top as follows: [If using circular needle, switch to double-pointed needles] Round 1: K6, k2tog. Repeat. Round 2 and all alternate rounds: K to end. Round 3: K5, k2tog. Repeat. Round 5: K4, k2tog. Repeat. Round 7: K3, k2tog. Repeat. Round 9: K2, k2tog. Repeat. Round 11: K1, k2tog. Repeat. Round 13: k2tog around Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, gather and tie off.
Crochet Flowers
Make 2. Using CC and crochet needle, chain 4. In the first stitch of the chain (4th stitch from hook) work a 2-dc cluster, chain 3, and slip st (first petal created). Still working in the SAME space, work \*chain 3, 2-dc cluster, chain 3, slip st (second petal created). Repeat from \* 3 more times (5 petals created). Photos and detailed step-by-step instructions for making a 2-dc cluster is available here: http://crochet.about.com/library/blcluster2.htm
FINISHING OFF
Sew the crochet flowers on hat; weave in all ends.
