Running man knitting pattern

from left to right :Jack frost, running girl, snowman, Santa. This pattern was developed over the course of about 2 years. It started when my twins here about 4 months old and my Eldest wanted to be more involved but found it difficult to play gently. Normal finger puppets resulted in poking and prodding more than gentle play but “running man” as he called it was just right. Running man would run up and down the twin's chests and tickle them, he would run up and down the side of the pushchair when we where queued up somewhere, and now running man runs just about every where the kids run. By now they have quite the collection of all my prototypes an they all get used regularly. In this pattern I have provided a basic recipe for making these dolls and some more detailed instructions on how to make the figures like Santa and Jack frost. I am intending to update this pattern as more figures get made by me, I am hoping to make some flower children next. When the pattern gets updated I will post a notice on our website and on the face book page. Obviously updates will be free of charge to those who have purchase the pattern already

This pattern is worked from the legs up all flat. One leg is knitted the yarn is broken, then the next leg gets knitted and joined to the first. The body is next and straight onto the body the head gets made. The arms are knitted separately and then sewn onto the body with a bit of pipe cleaner inside to be able to move them a bit.

The dolls body can be knitted in 1 colour with contrasting patterns for trousers and top or knit the the trousers an top in different colours There are different head coverings you can needle felt carded wool onto the head or knit some hair with bouclé Wool. Rather not have hair? Some stylish hat patterns are also offered
Gauge:
I have made a lot of different dolls, and used DK to light worsted weight on 3.50mm needles. As long as your gauge is tight enough for the stuffing not to show you should be fine. It is such a quick knit its (in my opinion) not really worth knitting a swatch. Required tools and yarn 3.5mm needles darning needle 20 gr main colour (a little more if you choose to make a hat) 10 gr skin colour 10 gr of hair yarn (for hair if you choose to crochet it) 10 gr of carded wool (for hair if you choose to felt it) felting needle (optional) wool for filling tiny amount of yarn for eyes and a mouth Abbreviations used k = knit stitch p = purl stitch k2tog = knit two stitches together p2tog = purl two stitches together Leg instructions if the leg is knitted in seed stitch Starting with leg1 Running man knitting pattern copyright 2009 Vera Lothian/mum2landtwins please read the copyright notice! Repeat for the second leg. Leg instructions if the leg is knitted in stockinette stitch cast on 15 stitches. \*Knit one row purl on row \* repeat from \* to \* until 9 rows have been completed. Joining legs
Join the two sets of live stitches onto the needle to continue knitting, ensuring the legs are facing the right way. Knit the first leg do a YO between the legs and knit the second leg. Cast on8 stitches turn the work, work the 8 stitches you just cast on the first 7 stitches the yo and the last 7 stitches cast on 8 stitches turn and work all 32 stitches. Version 1.7 If you are making a doll with a different coloured body change colour now if you are making a doll with the body in stocking stitch start stocking stitch now.

Continue working the body for a total of 12 rows. Lastbodyrow: k1 k2tog k2tog k13 k2tog k to the last 5 stitches k2tog k2tog k cut the yarn leaving a long tail. Draw this tail up trough all the stitches currently on the needles and leave it there change colour to skin colour work 9 rows of stockinette stitch row 10 k2tog to the end. Cut a long tail draw trough stitches and pull up tight.

Arms
make two cast on 8 stitches work stockinette stitch for 12 rows. Change to skin colour work skin colour for 3 rows. Cut yarn leaving a longish tail draw trough stitches and pull tight

Seaming the doll together
Start with the head using the cast of tail. I prefer to use a mattress stitch to stitch the whole thing together. Stuff the head firmly and pull the lifeline left between body & head tight to form the neck. Change to body colour and again using mattress stitch seam the two sides together. Ensuring to change colour if necessary when you get to the trouser section. Work the yarn to one side of the man, as if you are finished seaming, so you can start seaming up the body. Seam up the bottom of the body for /4 of the way stuff the body and close. Work away the remainder of the tail attach the pipe cleaner 3 stitches below the neck stick it trough until about halfway and twist it together. Wrap a small amount of batting around it. Seam the arm together from the hand down using the cast on tail stitch it to the body making sure the seam is facing down. Start attaching the arm two stitches down from the neck and work your way around the arm. Finish of and work the remainder of the yarn away into the body. Here's some pictures of how I seam up a doll. I obviously used contrasting colours so you'd be able to see what I'm doing:

Hat 1
the hat is worked in garter stitch cast on 25 stitches knit all rows for 4 rows \*k1 k2tog knit to the last 3 stitches k2tog k1 \*knit all stitches Repeat the last two stitches until there fewer than 6 stitches cut yarn leaving a reasonably long tail and draw it up trough the remaining stitches. Work the cast on tail into the work and use the cast of tail to finish the hat Using the long tail seam the two sides together using your preferred method. The hat is fairly stretchy once sewn up so any stitch will be fine. Place the hat on the dolls head and stitch the two together. Work the remainder of the yarn away into the hat.
Hat 2
caston30stitches knit 4 rows of rib stitch (k1p1 to the end) knit in stocking stitch for 6 rows on the last row k2tog to the end. Cut yarn leaving a long tail draw up trough the remaining stitches and pull tight. Use the tail to sew the hat up The hats are easily knitted in stripes for hat 1 knit 2 rows per colour. For hat 2 knit the rib in one colour and then change the colour every two rows.
Themed dolls

Santa
Cast the legs on in white and knit one row in white before changing to red. Knit the Santa in stocking stitch. Knit the legs and when you get to the body part of the pattern knit 2 rows in white before finishing the doll as per pattern. Attach Santa's hat first and knit the beard onto the hat
Jack frost

Knit Jack as a two coloured doll all in stocking stitch. White trousers and a light blue body and hat. With papilloi craft yarns shade 52 knit a 2 stitch i-cord long enough to fit around jack's head just under his hat. Snowman

For the snowman knit him entirely in white and stocking stitch 2 French knots for eyes a tiny bit of felted orange or maybe some i-cord started 4st down to a 2 stitch i-cord to get the pointy carrot look as a nose. Acorn child

you'll need a dark brown for the acorn cap trousers and acorn cap hat and a lighter brown for the acorn and sweater part of the puppet. You'll also need a moss green fuzzy yarn for the hair (or a suitable other fuzzy yarn) knit the leg part of your acorn child in a dark brown, the sweater part & the arms in the lighter brown and the hands and head obviously in your chosen skin tone. Knit a strip of fuzzy yarn 3 or 4 stitches wide and until it fits around the head just keep measuring. Don't make it to long as it will obviously stretch a bit. For the acorn cap hat knit hat number 2 in stockinette stitch turn it inside out and knit a couple of inches of i-cord to attach to the top as a stem. There is a good video on knittinghelp.com on how to do i-cord For the acorn cast on 8 kfab to end purl to end kl kfab to end Running man knitting pattern copyright 2009 Vera Lothian/mum2landtwins please read the copyright notice!
