Banksia Cowl Knitting Pattern: Unique Drop Stitch Design with Backwards Loop Cast On

Key

K-Knit P-Purl K2E—-Knit 2 edge stitches at the beginning and end of every row. BWL—backwards loop cast on. Notes: In the (P1, K1, P1) call out section, the P stitches exist to help give the drop stitch section more definition. When you are dropping/unraveling a stitch, follow it down to make sure that the base of the stitch is a BWL cast on. You may want to use a piece of scrap yarn to loop around the BWL to make it stand out, so it doesn't get lost in the fabric. The stitch counts are given at the end of each row, if you would like to count and make sure that you have the correct number of stitches. Row 10: K2E, K11, (P1, BWL, P1), K8, K2E: 26 Row 11, 13: K2E, P8, (K1, P1, K1), P11, K2E: 26 Row 12: K2E, K11, (P1, K1, P1), K8, K2E: 26 Row 14: K2E, K11, (P1, K1, P1), K4, BWL, k4, K2E: 27 Row 15: K2E, P9, (K1, P1, K1), P11, K2E: 27 Row 16: K2E, K5, unravel 1 stitch down to the BWL, K5, (P1, K1, P1), K9, K2E: 26

BANKSIA COWL

Banksia Cowl - inspired by the organic and unusual forms of the Banksia pods. The pattern is created by unraveling a stitch created by a Backwards Loop Cast On (BWL), against a stockinet stitch background. Some of the BWLs that become dropped stitches are set apart with PI stitches, and some are just floating through the fabric. Once you have knit this cowl in its rectangular form, use these stitches to create your own Banksia cowl, as long and skinny as you want, or as fat and wide as you'd like, or even triangular. You can also cast off when you like, or when you run out of yarn. Make sure you unravel any BWL stitches that you've made, or don't if you like - your decision! Have fun! Materials: One 8-ounce skein of Yarn Hollow Burly yarn, I32 yards. Gauge: Not Applicable. A loose gauge is fun, and a tighter gauge makes a more drapey fabric with big loopy holes.

Needle:

Size 15 US (10 mm). Use straight needles, or circulars, whichever you prefer. Cast on 24 Sts in long tail cast on or cabled cast on. Do not use the backwards loop cast on for the first cast on edge. ROW 89/90: Knit across. You can add one more K row before casting off if you like your bottom border more prominent, and if there is yarn left. Row 91: Cast off. Weave in ends, block, trim yarn ends, and wear! Wet blocking and pinning is suggested.
