News Girl Cap

Description: This loosely fitting cap features a soft brim and an easy spiraling lacy type design that swirls to the center of the top. The brim can be stiffened if desired. Yarn: Any worsted yarn will work. (#4 medium weight) Cotton, washable wool and acrylic all work well. You will need about 3.5 oz. of yarn. Needles: 16" circular needles size 7 or size to obtain gauge for hat band. 16" circular needles 10. Gauge: While gauge is not as important with this hat as it would be for a fitted garment, the circumference of the band is critical. Too big and the hat will slip down on the head too far, too small and the hat will be too tight. Gauge check method 1: Cast on 64 stitches and K1, P1 for 9 rows and bind it off. Try the sample hat band on to check for fit. A generic measurement would be $19^{\prime\prime}$ 。 Gauge check method 2 ( If you don't mind a little math): Cast on 21 stitches with smaller needles and knit in Kl, P1 rib for 9 rows. Bind it off. Measure the knit piece lengthwise. Measure your head where you want the hat to fit. Divide by 3. The knit sample needs to stretch to equal that measurement. (If your head measured 23, a third of that would be 7 and 2/3 inches. The sample measures 6" giving a little over an inch and a half of stretch.) Notions: tapestry or yarn needle and stitch marker. Optional items: stiffening for brim, $1/2^{\prime\prime}$ wide ribbon length equal to crown of head. Depending on how rigic you want the brim, use sew-on interfacing available at fabric stores or light weight plastic. Brim: Cast on 28 stitches loosely. You are creating an hourglass shape that will be folded in half when the hat is completed. Turn at the end of each row. Topside of the brim Row 1: Purl Row 2: K1, SSK, K11, Kf&b, K10, K2tog, K1 (27) Row 3, 5, 7, 9: K1, P across to last stitch, K1 Row 4: K1, SSK, K4, Kf&b, K5, Kf&b, K5, Kf&b, K4, K2tog, K1 (28) Row 6: K1, SSK, K11, Kf&b, K10, K2tog, K1 (27) Row 8: K1, SSK, K4, Kf&b, K5, Kf&b, K5, Kf&b, K4, K2tog, K1 (28) Row 10: K1, SSK, K11, Kf&b, K10, K2tog, K1 (27) Rows 11, 13, 15: K1, P2tog, Purl to last 3 stitches, P2tog, K1 Row 12: K1, SSK, K9, Kf&b, K9, k2tog, K1 (24) Row 14: K1, SSK, K8, Kf&b, K7, k2tog, K1 (21) Beginning with row 16 you are knitting the underside of the brim. This is to allow the side seam to roll to the underside of the brim. Cast on for hat: With the right side of the under-brim facing you, use knitting cast-on method to add 38 more stitches. (total 64) Band: Turn so the wrong side of the brim is facing you. Knit first stitch on brim end joining the circle. Be very careful not to twist stitches. Purl 2nd stitch. Continue with K 1, P i for a total of 7 rows. Hat: Switch to larger needles. Place a stitch marker on the right needle. Repeat from \* to \* to stitch marker. Row 1: Knit all stitches. Row 2: $\star_{\mathsf{K}3}$ , Kf&b\* around (80) Row 3 and all odd numbered rows through 23: K7 \*YO, K2tog. $\mathsf{K}6^{\star}$ ending with a YO, K2tog. You will be moving the stitch marker 1 stitch to the left at the end of each odd numbered row in order to K2tog. This offsets the "holes" to create the spiral. Row 4 and all even numbered rows through 22: Knit all stitches. When you finish row 23 you should have 1l rows of "holes". You are going to start decreasing every other row. You will be ending with K2tog and moving the stitch marker to the left every row. Row 24: K7 \*K2tog, $\mathsf{K}6^{\star}$ end with K2tog. Row 25: K6 $\mathrel{\ast}\mathrel{\bigcirc}$ K2tog, ${\mathsf K}{\mathsf{5}}^{{\star}}$ end with YO, K2tog. Row 26: K6 \*K2tog, ${\mathsf K}{\mathsf{5}}^{{\star}}$ end with K2tog. Thread onto tapestry needle and draw through remaining stitches on knitting needle. Pull stitches tight. Draw yarn to WS and stitch across center circle of stitches twice. Knot and weave in end.
Joining edges of brim:
Fold brim wrong side out and stitch ends with tapestry needle and yarn. Turn right side out. OPTIONAL: cut stiffening material using template on last page for pattern. Insert into brim. Sew the cast-on edge to the bottom of the ribbing making sure the side seams are toward the underside. Weave in any loose ends. Dampen and press seam edges flat. OPTIONAL: Sew a piece of ribbon to the inside of the hat band to keep it from stretching out. OPTIONAL: You may want to tack the forward fold of the hat to the brim.
