Gauge: 25 st and 32 rounds = 4 inches in circular stockinette stitch Skill: Beyond beginner Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Suri Merino Paint, 55% Suri Alpaca, 45% Extra Fine Merino, 50 grams, 109 yds, color 8820. 2 balls. Needles: US#4 (3.5mm) dpns or circular needles, whichever you prefer to knit in the round. I find dpns helpful when picking up the stitches for the fingers. Use whatever size needles you need to make gauge. Supplies: stitch markers, extra yarn or stitch holders, tapestry needle for weaving in ends. Pattern Notes
These gloves can be knit in the round on dpns, two circular needles, or one long circular needle using the magic loop method. I find it helpful to split the stitches exactly in half, that way it is easier to visualize the palm and back of hand stitches, and makes it easier to divide up the stitches for the fingers. @2009 Susan Iding. LEFT GLOVE
CO 44 [48, 52] sts. Arrange stitches 0n 4 dpns, 2 circular needles, 0r one long needle using magic loop method into two halves. Join to work in round. The first half of the stitches are the back-of-hand stitches, and the second half are the palm stitches. Work K2, P2 rib for 20 rounds. K2 [4,6], work cable pattern according to chart. Knit remaining back of hand stitches and all palm stitches. At Row 8 of cable pattern, begin thumb gusset: work as set through st 43 [47, 51], pm, m1, pm, K1. Next row, work as set to marker, slip marker, ml, k1, m1, slip marker, K1. There are now three new stitches between the markers. Work one row even. Repeat last two rows until there are 15 [17, 19] stitches between the markers. On last row, slip the gusset stitches onto a spare length of yarn, remove markers, CO one st using backward loop method, and continue working the cable pattern. Palm stitches now have one more stitch than back-of-hand stitches. Work even until cable pattern is finished. If necessary, continue working in St St until palm measures 3.5 [4, 4.5] inches long above the ribbing. Next round: k18 [19, 21] sts, put 8 [10, 10] st on spare yarn or stitch holder for pinky finger. CO 2 sts using backward loop method to cover gap and knit remaining sts. Knit these 39 [41, 45] sts for 3 rounds. Work index finger: k7 [7, 8], place 24 [26, 28] st on spare yarn, CO 2 st using backward loop method to cover gap, k8 [8, 9]. K these 17 [17, 19] sts in the round until index finger measures 2.5 [3, 3.25] inches or desired length. K2tog for one round, ending K1. Break yarn and thread tail through remaining stitches and fasten off. Work middle finger: place next 6 [7, 7] held st on needle, join yarn and knit 6, [7, 7], CO 2 sts using backward loop method, place last 6 [7, 7] held sts on needle, knit these sts, and pick up two sts along base of CO edge from index finger. Knit these 16 [18, 18] sts in round until middle finger measures 2.75 [3, 3.5] inches or desired length. On last row, slip the gusset stitches onto a spare length of yarn, remove markers, CO one st using backward loop method, and continue the round.
