CHUNKY HONEYCOMB HAT
Size: One size: approximately 20" circumference (unstretched) by 8.5" high -- hat willstretch to fit up to22"circumference Materials: 100 yds. super-bulky wt. yarn SUPERBULKY in Main Color (MC) -- Neon Orange 100 yds. super-bulky wt. yarn suEu in Contrast Color A (CCA) -- Neon Pink 80 yds. super-bulky wt. yarn seu in Contrast Color B (CCB) -- Fire Mix Sample hat shown in Schachenmayr “Bravo Big" (100% acrylic, 131 yds/120 m per 7 oz/200 g ball) in colors #08279 Neon Orange (MC), #08234 Neon Pink (CCA) and Schachenmayr "Bravo Big Color" in #00085 Fire Mix (CCB) Circular knitting needle (20" to 24" length) in size US 15 (10 mm), or size needed to achieve gauge Set of four double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 15 (10 mm) Stitch marker Tapestry needle Gauge: 6 sts & 11 rows = 4"/10 cm in stockinette st on size US 15 (10 mm) needles Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), each (ea), knit (k), knit two together (k2tog), needle (ndl), pattern (patt), purl (p), purl two together (p2tog), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), round (rnd), slip (sl), stitch (st), together (tog) Pattern notes: Hat is knit in the round from lower rib to top. When directed to slip stitches, slip them purlwise with yarn in back. Carry color in use loosely behind slipped stitches to allow for stretch and avoid puckering. When changing colors, pick up new color from under old color to avoid holes. Join colors as instructed and carry unused strands up loosely inside of work until needed again. Do not cut colors until directed to do so. When working top decreases, switch to double-pointed needles (dpns) when stitches no longer fit comfortably on circular needle.
Hat
With circular ndl and MC, CO 40, join for knitting in the round. Place marker to note beg of rnds. Begin ribbing: Rnd 1: \*K1, p1, rep from \* around. Rnds 2-3: Rep Rnd 1. Rnd 4: K. Begin honeycomb pattern (Note: carry unused strands loosely up inside of work): Drop MC but do not cut it, join CCB. Rnd 1: With CCB, k. Rnd 2: With CCB, p. Join CCA, drop CCB but do not cut it. Rnd 3: With CCA, k2, sl 2, \*k6, sl 2, rep from \* to last 4 sts, k4. Rnds 4-6: Rep Rnd 3. Drop CCA but do not cut it, pick up CCB. Rnd 7: With CCB, k. Rnd 8: With CCB, p. Drop CCB but do not cut it, pick up MC. Rnd 9: With MC, \*k6, sl 2, rep from \* around. Rnds 10-12: Rep Rnd 9. Drop MC but do not cut it, pick up CCB. Rnd 13: With CCB, k. Rnd 14: With CCB, p. Rnds 15-21: Rep Rnds 3-9 once. Begin decreases (Note: change to dpns when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular ndl): Rnd 1 (dec rnd): With MC, \*k2, k2tog, k2, sl 2, rep from \* around -- 35 sts. Rnd 2: With MC: \*k5, sl 2, rep from \* around. Rnd 3 (dec rnd): With MC, \*k1, (k2tog) twice, sl 2, rep from \* around -- 25 sts. Drop and cut MC and CCA leaving 6" tails for weaving in, pick up and cont with CCB for ren hat. Rnd 4 (dec rnd): With CCB, \*k3, k2tog, rep from \* around -- 20 sts. Rnd 5: P. Rnd 6 (dec rnd): \*K2, k2tog, rep from \* around -- 15 sts. Rnd 7 (dec rnd): \*K1, k2tog, rep from \* around -- 10 sts. Rnd 8 (dec rnd): \*K2tog, rep from \* around -- 5 sts. Cut yarn, leaving 8" tail. Gather rem sts tog and cinch to close. Finishing: Weave in ends.
