SIMPLEMITTENS
Soft and warm, these mittens are easy to knit and feature a snug ribbed cuff. THE DETAILS THEMEASUREMENTS 7 (8, 9)" hand circumference; 10 (101/2, 11)" long.
SUPPLIES
Yarn: 1hank Merino20o Note: 2 hanks of Merino 20o will make 3 sets of 7"circumference mittens Needles: Set of 4 double pointed knitting needles (dpn) sized to get gauge. Other Stuff: Removable marker Scrap yarn to hold thumb sts Twostitchmarkers GAUGE 41/2 sts = 1" Suggested needle size: US 8 (5mm). Note:Bothmittensareknitthesame and canbe worn on eitherhand.

HOW TO KNIT IT
CUFF
Cast onto one dpn 32 (36, 40) sts. Divide sts as evenly as possible onto 3 dpn and join for working in the rnd. Place a removable marker in first st on first needle to mark start of rnd, and move marker up every few rnds. Rib rnd: \*K2, p2; rep from \*. Rep Rib rnd until cuff measures 3". Knit 3 rnds. Set-up rnd for thumb gusset: K15 (17, 19) sts, pm, k2 sts, pm, k15 (17, 19) sts to end of rnd. Gusset increase rnd: Knit to first gusset marker, slip marker, mi-r, knit to next marker, m1-l, slip marker, knit to end - 2 sts increased; 4 sts between gusset markers. Knit 2 rnds even. Rep last 3 rnds 3 (4, 4) more times - 10 (12, 12) sts between gusset markers; 40 (46,50) sts. Next rnd: Removing gusset markers as you come to them, knit to first gusset marker, slip 10 (12, 12) thumb sts to scrap yarn, use backward loop cast-on method to cast on 2 sts, knit to end - 32 (36, 40) sts.
HAND
Continue in stockinette stitch until piece measures 9 (91/2, 934)" from cast on or approx 1 (1, 114)" less than desired length. Decrease for top as follows: Size 9"ONLY Next rnd: [K8, k2tog] 4 times - 36 sts. Sizes 8 (9)"ONLY Next rnd: [K7, k2tog] 4 times - 32 (32) sts.


ALL SIZES:
Rnd 1: [K6, k2tog] 4 times - 28 sts. Rnd 2: [K5, k2tog] 4 times - 24 sts. Rnd 3: [K4, k2tog] 4 times - 20 sts. Rnd 4: [K3, k2tog] 4 times - 16 sts. Rnd 5: [K2, k2tog] 4 times - 12 sts. Rnd 6: [K1, k2tog] 4 times - 8 sts. Break yarn, leaving a 6" tail and pull through rem sts, draw up firmly and fasten off on Ws. Thumb: Place 10 (12, 12) thumb sts onto dpn as follows: 4 (5, 5) sts on first and second needles and 2 sts on third needle. Join yarn to end of 2 sts on third needle, then with third needle pick up and knit 2 sts along edge of hand - 12 (14, 14) sts. Place a removable stitch marker in first st on first needle to mark start of rnd, and join for working in the rnd. Work in stockinette stitch until thumb measures 134 (2, 214)" from hand or 14" less thandesired length. Shape thumb tip as follows: Size7"ONLY Rnd 1: [K1, k2tog] 4 times - 8 sts. Rnd 2: K2tog 4 times - 4 sts. Sizes 8 (9)" ONLY Rnd 1: K2tog 7 times -7 sts. Rnd 2: K1, K2tog 3 times - 4 sts.
ALL SIZES:
Break yarn, leaving a 6" tail and pullthrough rem sts, draw up firmly and fasten off on Ws.
FINISHING
