With the knit side facing, rotate/turn the knitted piece to the side so the left hand edge is up. Pick up and knit 3st along that edge. Rotate so the bottom edge is up, then pick up and knit 3st more. = 9st Next: begin Chart A with the first purl side/wrong side row. Continue increasing in pattern until there are a total of 203st. Continue with Chart B, and then work Chart C 2.5 times or to the desired length, ending with a wrong side row (complete the purl row). The example was worked through r38 (or: r1-16 two times + r1-6). NOTE: Chart C is compressed. It shows the lace pattern and edge increases for half of the shawlette and the three selvedge stitches are drawn in on both sides of the chart (shaded in a different color). The selvedge stitches should only be worked on the outside edges of the shawlette. To work a row of the chart: work the 3 selvedge stitches as written, work to the last yarn over in that row of the chart, this will be the middle of the shawlette, work the central spine stitch, and then begin the chart again at the first yarn over of the same row (skipping over the selvedge stitches this time). Work the charted row to the end and then complete the selvedge stitches. Finishing: purl the next 2r for a purl ridge on the front of the shawlette and to complete another wrong side row. Turn the work to the front and bind off with the crochet hook as follows: Ch3 in the first stitch, slip stitch into the base of the 2"d chain stitch to create a bump, ch1, and then slip stitch into the next 3 knit stitches as one. Ch3 again, slip stitch into the base of the 2"d chain, and continue in this way to the central spine stitch of the shawlette, working 1 or 2 of the edge stitches instead of 3 if they do not divide evenly by 3. Work this way into the center stitch twice for a centered loop and then continue as before for the remaining stitches until the entire edge is bound off. Weave in the ends and then block to open up the lace.

For each full 16r row repeat completed, the shawlette increases 32st (16st per side). Because of this, each 16r repeat adds 1 full stitch repeat. So on the first time through, the bold sections should be worked 6 times, on the next pass, they should be worked 7 times, and on the pass after that, they should be worked 8 times. Working this way, the pattern can be continued indefinitely. r2)) purl to end on this and all following even numbered rows. r3)) k3, yo, knit to the last stitch before the central spine, yo, {k1}, yo, knit until there are 3st remaining, yo, k3. Adjusting for the increases as noted in r1, repeat these 16r approximately 1.5 times more or to the desired length, ending on a purl row (the example was worked through r6). Finishing: Bind off with the crochet hook as follows: Facing the front of the shawlette, ch3 in the first stitch, slip stitch into the base of the 2"d chain stitch to create a bump, ch1, and then slip stitch into the next 3 knit stitches as one. Ch3 again, slip stitch into the base of the 2"d chain, and continue in this way to the central spine stitch of the shawlette, working 1 or 2 of the edge stitches instead of 3 if they do not divide evenly by 3.
