Colourwork mittens by Valeria Kerkk? This pattern was inspired by freely floating and cascading horse manes. I wanted to knit curvy lines resembling the almost tangled locks of hair. These mittens are knit in fingering weight and have an afterthought thumb. The mittens start with a short moss stitch edging before the cuff pattern begins. After the cuff there is a short break before patterning for hand starts. Size: Finished circumference 20 cm (8"),finished lenght 24 cm (9,4") Gauge: 35 sts and 40 rows = 10 cm/4"
Materials
CC: 1 skein of Schoppel Wolle Zauberball(75% Wool, 25% Nylon, 420 m (459 yards)/ 100 grams) (shown in Oktoberfest) MC: 1 skein of Regia Color 4-ply (75% Wool, 25% Nylon, 210 m (230 yards)/ 50 grams) (shown in white) 2.25 mm dpns waste yarn for afterthought thumb, darning needle
Pattern
Hand
CO 68 sts. Join round and divide evenly on needles. Rnd 1: \*K1, P1\*, repeat to end. Rnd 2: \*P1, K1\*, repeat to end. Repeats rnds 1-2 3 more times. Begin working the mitten charts. Use waste yarn for afterthought thumb hole where indicated. When chart starts decreasing, begin decreases on every rnd: SSK on ndls 1 & 3, k2tog on ndls 2 & 4. When at the end of chart, cut yarn and thread it through the remaining stitches.
Thumb
Take out the waste yarn and pick up 26 sts around thumb hole. If you get holes around the thumb, pick extra stitches and decrease them on the next round. Work thumb chart to end. Cut yarn and thread through remaining stitches. You can alter thumb length by knitting or omitting some MC rows at the beginning of chart. Thumb as charted is 7 cm/2,5".
Finishing
Weave in ends. Soak and block.
