You will need:
Crochet hook (I used 2.75mm; US size C) Sewing needle Blue color yarn: approx. 251 yds (230m) White color yarn: approx. 44 yds (40m) Dark blue color yarn: approx. 44 yds (40m) Black color yarn to embroider mouth, nose and eyes Stuffing Pattern can be made with sport or worsted weight yarn. Hippo size: 11 inch (28cm), when done with sport weight yarn. Note: The size of hippo may vary depending on the size of hook and yarn you use.
Abbreviations:
ch - Chain Stitch sc - Single Crochet dc - double crochet st/sts - Stitch/Stitches sl st - Slip Stitch inc (Increase) - 2 sc into 1 st dc inc - 2 dc into 1st dec (Decrease) - 1 sc over 2 sts (I recommend using invisible decrease).
Instructions:

Finish and leave long end to sew eyeball onto the head. Make two eyeballs.
Eyelid (make 2) Blue color yarn: ch 8 Rnd. 1: 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5st, 3sc in last st, working across opposite side sc in next 5st, 2sc in last st; 16sts Finish and leave long end to sew eyelid onto the head. Make two eyelids.
Tail
Blue color yarn: ch 2 Rnd. 1: 5sc in 2nd ch from hook; 5sts Rnd. 2: sc around; 5sts Rnd. 3: inc, sc in next 4sc; 6sts Rnd. 4: sc around; 6sts Rnd. 5: inc, sc in next 5sc; 7sts Rnd. 6-15: sc around; 7sts Finish and leave long end to sew tail to the body (do not stuff)
Cut several blue color 3- inch (7.5cm) strands and fix them on the tail's tip. Insert crochet hook into the hole. Fold a piece of yarn in half and start pulling the yarn through the hole as pictured.
Pull the yarn over the hook and pull it through the loop so you can attach it to the tail.
Cut yarn with scissors leaving suitable length.
FINISHINGDETAILS
Embroider eyeballs with black yarn, stuff them and sew onto the head.
Place the eyelids on the top of eyeballs and sew them.
Sew ears onto the head.
Embroider nose and mouth areas with black yarn (if you prefer, mark those areas with a textile marker before embroidering).
Sew head to the body.

First leg: White color yarn: Make ch 30. Sl st in first chain to form a ring. Rnd. 1: sc around; 30sts Dark blue color yarn: Rnd.2: ch 3, dc around; 30sts White color yarn: Rnd. 3: sc around; 30sts Dark blue color yarn: Rnd.4: ch 3, dc around; 30sts White color yarn: Rnd.5: sc around; 30sts Finish and end with short tail (first leg only). Do not finish second leg. You will work directly into joining legs and continuing shorts.
Second leg:
Work second leg same as the first leg through Rnd.5. Do not fasten off.
Now you will join the two legs. Hold two legs together and single crochet one stitch from the first and one stitch from the second leg together; 5sts

Second lace: Join white yarn in the 6th st to the right of first lace, ch 31, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch; 30sts. Finish and cut yarn. Cross laces in across hippo's back and sew one to each top corner of the chest part of the shorts.
Cap:
White color yarn: Make ch 70. Sl st in first chain to form a ring. Rnd. 1: sc around; 70sts Dark blue color yarn: Rnd. 2: sc in next 25sc, Row 1: dc in next 20sts, ch 3, turn; 20sts Row 2: dc in each st, ch 3, turn; 20sts Row 3: dc in each st; 20sts Then continue to crochet down one side of all 3 rows making 5sc, sc in next 25sc. White color yarn: Rnd. 3: sc around; 80sts Finish.
