Felted Knit Mason Jar Cozy
I've been using my mason jars to store my lunches. They are sturdy, reusable and microwavable. BUT, the hot food in the hot jars is hot to the touch, so I designed these mason jar cozys. This pattern will work for two different sized mason jars - wide mouth 500ml / pint 10" diameter and 5" to screw band and decorative 500ml /pint 12" diameter and 3" to screw band. This is a great way to use of scraps of felt-able yarn and it took me about an hour to knit one up. A finished cozy weighs less than 40g.
Tools & Materials
6mm needles - or 4mm needles - DPN, 9"” cable or two pair of cables, or long cables for a magic loop 100% wool worsted or bulky - eg. Paton's Classic Wool two strands or Lions Brand Wool two srands or Lions Brand Martha Stewart Roving
Notes:
In my test cozies, the fabric shrunk about 20 to 25% in height (row) and about 5-10 % in width (stiches) after the first wash in hot water. Be patient it's worth it to get the right height BUT if you have to you can add height to the top by stitching some yarn to the top and knitting from the cast on up - see photo.

Because I had 6mm needles I doubled the worsted gauge yarn 100% wool double, I did a long tail cast on but you don't have to, single yarn on 4.5 mm needles would work. Cast on to the jar diameter + 10%.
Before felting

After and after 2nd wash

Directions - For bulky yarn using the 6mm needles: cast on 45 stiches, join ends, place marker. For the single worsted weight yarn cast on 60 stiches on the 4mm needles row 1 - knit 1 purl 1 - this will keep the top edge from curling row 1 - 20 knit = at least 4" height to desired height start decreases to create bottom lip. row 21 - k2t, k1 repeat row 22 - k all row 23 - k2 row 24 - k row 25 - cast off Wash in hot water and tumble dry. Wash again to shrink if needed. I left a hole in the bottom of the cozy. You don't need a complete bottom but if you prefer you can continue to decrease to close the hole.
