CHUNKY BRIMMED WINTER HAT/CHAPEAU

Pattern illustration

Chunky Brimmed Winter Chapeau I wrote up the pattern, but I want to say this up front, I like my hat where it has it's own shape and pops on my head-I have thick hair and don't like it squeezing my head. If you prefer a snugger hat, stop increasing after round 6 and do even rows from row 7-22. Yarn used: Wool Ease Thick N Quick-102 yards, 6 ounce skein-1 skein You may use two strands of worsted weight yarn held together throughout or a bulky wool yarn. Hook size: $9\;\mathrm{mm}$ (this was an M hook for me, check MM size, each manufacturer is different) Notions needed: Stitch marker (or safety pin), tapestry needle for weaving in ends. Gauge: $8\;\mathbf{sc}=4"$ Finished size: Almost $24"$ in circumference

Instructions:

Foundation row: Chain 4, join w/ sl st to form a ring. Work 6 sc into ring. Place marker in last sc (you will move the marker up for each round-this is worked in a spiral and until round 8 (or 7 for the smaller hat) you will have an increase made in the marked stitch for each round. (Doing the hat using this method will ensure no seam) Round 1: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc) Round 2: $^*1$ sc in next st, 2 sc in next (inc made)\* repeat around (18 sc) Round 3: $^*1$ sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next (inc)\* around (24 sc) Round 4: $^*1$ sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next (inc)\*around (30 sc) Round 5: $^*1$ sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next (inc)\* around (36 sc) Round 6: $^*1$ sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next (inc)\* around (42 sc) Round 7: $^*1$ sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next (inc)\* around (48 sc) At this round, the hat should measure 7" across when laid flat Rounds 8-23: 1 sc in each sc around (even, no increasing).
