Substitutions:

Look for worsted-weight yarn that specifies 20 sts/10 cm (4") on 4.5 mm (Us 7) needles on the ball band.

Special Abbreviations:

DPN double-pointed needles K2tog knit 2 stitches together P2SSO pass 2 slipped sts over SSK slip, slip, knit (decrease) yo yarn over (increase) With Colour A, CO 84 sts - join to work in the round. Ribbed Brim: Rnd 1: (K4, P1, K1, P1) 12 times Rep Rnd 1 until brim measures 4 cm (1.5") from CO edge. Next Rnd: [K2, M1, K2, (K1, P1, K1) to create seed stitch] 12 times (96 sts) Commence Seed Stitch Rib: Rnd 1: (K2, P1, K2, P1, K1, P1) 12 times Rnd 2: (K2, P1, K2, K1, P1, K1) 12 times Rep last 2 rnds until hat measures 10 cm (4") from CO edge - switch to Colour B. Work in pattern until hat measures 13 cm (5"), ending with Rnd 2.

Crown Shaping:

Rnd 1: K2, P1, K1, (SSK, K1, K2tog, K1, P1, K1) 11 times, SSK, K1, K last st of rnd together with 1st st of next rnd (72 sts) Rnds 2-4: K all sts Rnd 5: (K3, sl 2 sts together knitwise, K1, P2SSO) 12 times (48 sts) Rnds 6-7: Kall sts Rnd 8: (K1, K2tog) around (32 sts) Rnds 9-10: K all sts Rnd 11: (K1, K2tog) 10 times, K2 (22 sts) Rnds 12-13: K all sts Rnd 14: K2tog around (11 sts) Fasten off leaving a long tail. Thread tail onto a blunt-ended needle and then thread it through the 11 remaining sts - pull up tightly to close the opening. Work in all ends.

Small Leaves (make 3):

CO 5 sts with Colour C. Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, K1, yo, K2 (7 sts) Row 2: K Row 3: K3, yo, K1, yo, K3 (9 sts) Row 4: K Row 5: SSK, K5, K2tog (7 sts) Row 6: K Row 7: SSK, K3, K2tog (5 sts) Row 8: K Row 9: SSK, K1, K2tog (3 sts) Rows 10 & 11: K Row 12: Sl1, K2tog, PSSO Large Leaves (make 3): CO 7 sts with Colour C.
