CHART 1
Start working the Chart 1. 2 edge sts at the beginning and at the end of the row are not shown in the Chart. Edge sts and the central sts are worked in garter stitch (k in odd and in even rows). Wrong side: p all stitches (except for edge sts and the central st).

Work rows 1-10. In row 11, work sts before the repeat, then the pattern repeat (framed), then sts after the repeat. Work rows 11-15 until you have 205 sts between the edge sts and the central st (i.e., stitch count 2 + 205 + 1 + 205 + 2 = 415). If you wish a larger or a smaller shawl, you can make less or more repeats of rows 11-15 but make sure that the number of sts between the edge sts and the central st is dividable by 12 and you have 1 st remaining (i.e., the number of sts is 12 times X + 1). Switch to 3.5 mm needles. This is important, because the edge lace is denser than the body lace. Work Chart 2 one time (on wrong side, p all stitches except for the edge sts and the central st). Knit 4 rows in garter stitch. Bind off loosely. You may like Anna's stretchy bind off:

Solanum
SHAWL BY DIANA ROZENSHTEYN

Solanum is a large and diverse genus of flowering plants, including eggplant. Solanum is an airy lace shawl with beautiful and intricate border. The shawl is seamless and knitted top-down from the central neck stitches to the edge. The shawl has crescent shape which is achieved by 6 stitch increases per every two rows. The shawl can be finished with a picot bind off if desired. Instructions for an alternative beaded picot bind off are also included in the pattern. Solanum shawl can be knitted in one color or two colors with a contrasting color accentuating the wavy shape of the lace pattern and the delicate picot bind off.
FINISHED SIZE
The sample shawls were knitted in two different sizes: The smaller (purple) sample shawl in the photographs after blocking was 168 cm (66 inches) for the straight edge on the top of the shawl and 33 cm (13 inches) for the height of the shawl at the center. The larger (gray) sample shawl in the photographs after blocking was 200 cm (79 inches) for the straight edge on the top of the shawl and 42 cm (16.5 inches) for the height of the shawl at the center. You can easily change the shawl's size by knitting stockinette portion of the shawl larger by multiples of 42 stitches (14 rows).

GAUGE
The gauge is not critical in knitting this shawl. Adjust your needle size to suit your yarn and achieve the size and the look of the shawl of your choice.
YARN
For the small (purple) sample shawl: 405 yards (370.3m) of ColourMart 100% Extra Fine Merino 18/58nm DK yarn was used. For the large (gray) sample shawl: 762 yards (yarn held double) of main color and 203 yards (yarn held double) of accent color of ColourMart Cashmere 3/28NM Heavy Lace were used. If using a single strand of yarn you will need 381 yards of main color and 102 yards of accent color for a large shawl. The DK 8-ply yarn and 2ply lace yarn held double can be substituted for a sport 5-ply or fingering 4-ply weight yarn if desired.
NEEDLES
US 5-3.75 mm 36" (g1 cm) circular needles for the shawl's body. US 6-4.0 mm needles for a non-picot bind off.
ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES
Blocking supplies Tapestry needle or a crochet hook to weave in the ends

READING CHARTS
There are 3 charts used in this pattern for the shawl's border pattern: Chart A, B and C. All charts show Rs rows only. WS rows stitches are knitted as seen, except for the edge stitches which are Knit in every row. The shawl is shaped by 6 stitch increases every 2 rows. All increases are shown in the charts. YO stitches used for increasing the shawl size are knit as follows: ● YO made on RS is purled through the front loop and then purled through the back loop on WS (you get 2 sts out of the single YO). YO made on WS is knitted through the back loop on RS rows (you get 1 st out of the singleYO). YO stitches used in the lace pattern in Charts A, B and C are knit as follows Single YO is purled trough the front loop on WS. ?First YO of the double YO is purled through the front loop. Second YO of double YO is purled through the back loop on WS. Purple shading on the charts shows chart repeats. Edge stitches are included in the charts and are always Knit on RS and Knit on WS.
SET UP ROWS AND SHAWL BODY
With your main color (if you are knitting a two colors shawl) and Us 5 needle CO 3 sts. Knit 7 rows in garter stitch (K on RS, K on WS). At the end of 7th row do not turn the work. Pick up and knit 3 sts, one at each garter stitch ridge alongside the knitted fabric and 3 more sts at the CO edge. Total number of sts 9. Row 1 (RS): K3. YO, (K1, YO)x3. K3. Total 13 sts. Row 2 (WS): K3. YO, P7. YO, K3. Total 15 stS. Row 3 (RS): K3. YO. knit through the back loop. K until 4 sts left, knit through the back loop. YO. K3. Row 4 (WS): K3. YO, purl through the front and back loop. P until 4 sts left, purl through the front and back loop, YO, K3. Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until you have 189 sts for a small size shawl or 231 sts for a large size shawl. You can easily change the shawl's size by knitting stockinette portion of the shawl larger by multiples of 42 stitches (14 rows).
SHAWL BORDER AND BIND OFF
Please note, that if you are doing a two colors shawl version, you must knit the following rows in accent color: For Chart A: Rows 1-2. 9-10. For Chart B: no accent color is used in this chart. For Chart C: Rows 1-2, 9-10, 17-18. All other rows are knitted in main color. After you attach your accent color in row 1 of Chart A, simply move the yarn along the garter stitch edge of the shawl when color is not in use. When changing from one yarn to another, place the strand of the yarn you're changing from over the strand of the yarn you're going to knit for that row. This way. there aren't large loops of yarn at the edge and the edge is neat. Start knitting shawl border by following Chart A instructions. Repeat Rows 1-10 one time. Continue knitting shawl border by following Chart B instructions. Repeat Rows 1-16 one time. Continue knitting shawl border by following Chart C instructions. If you are not making a picot BO: Repeat Rows 1-17 one time ending on RS row. On the next WS row with US 6 needle BO all the stitches knitwise. If you are making a picot BO: Repeat Rows 1-18 one time ending on WS row. Next knit a picot BO as described bllow. If you are making a two colors shawl, knit picot BO in accent color.
