Juniper Tee

This pattern was developed because of my love of colors and color theory. I like using lots of different colors in my projects, which normally leads to Fair Isle. Except summer is a good time to wear cotton, and cotton is hard to use with complicated color work. So, I thought about lots of stripes and small sections of simple color work. The shape is a raglan tee shirt style, which is comfortable to wear and is flattering on everyone. The square neckline adds a feminine touch to a modest summer shirt. You can substitute your favorite color scheme, or make the stripe pattern simpler.

PATTERN NOTES
This pattern is worked in the round, from the bottom up. The top portion is worked back and forth, for a scooped U-neck. The jogless stripe method is used on the body and sleeves, but discontinued once the neck is separated. The shirt is fairly stretchy, so zero ease or 2 inches of negative ease is recommended. Provisional Cast On: Using crochet hook, make a chain of 2 more than number required for cast on. Use needle to pick up stitches, skipping first two chains. Pick up stitches through the back part of the chain, and then join to begin knitting in the round. Hem will be folded in half and both sets of stitches will be knitted together. Jogless Stripes: The jogless stripe method lets the stripes be at the same level all the way around. Work the first stitch and the stitch immediately below it together, as in k2tog. Only do this on rows with two or more rows of color, on the second row of the colorchange. Fair Isle pattern: $^{\ast}\mathbf{k}\,4$ with CC5, k2 with either CC2 or $\mathrm{CC}4^{*}$ , depending on pattern. Repeat from \* allthe way around.

PATTERN
Body: Using MC, and using a provisional cast on, make a chain of 158 (182, 200, 212, 224, 236, 254). Using smaller needles, pick up 156 (180, 198, 210, 222, 234, 252) stitches, then pm and join to form a round. Next row, work 78 (90, 99, 105, 111, 117, 126) sts, pm, k to the end. Work for 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4) inches. Then remove waste yarn and place live sts from chain onto spare needle. K both sets of sts together, using larger needle, folding hem in half, with the WS touching, and bottom sts behind top sts. There are 156 (180, 198, 210, 222, 234, 252) stitches. K one round in MC. Begin stripe pattern. Continue pattern until work measures 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5) inches. Waist Shaping: Next row, \*k2tog, k to 2 sts before next marker, ssk, sm, k2tog, k to the end. Work 7 rows, then work waist shaping row. Repeat from \* twice more, so there are 144 (168, 186, 198, 210, 222, 240) sts. Work 8 rows even. Next row, k1, m1, kto 1 stitch before next marker, m1, k1, sm, k1, m1, k to the end. Repeat increase row twice more, until there are 156 (180, 198, 210, 222, 234, 252) stitches. Continue stripe pattern until body measures 14 (15, 15, 15, 16, 16, 16) inches. Place 12 (14, 16, 16, 18, 18, 18) sts on waste yarn, 6 (7,8, 8, 9, 9, 10) sts before and after side markers. Set body aside.

Sleeves (make 2): Using MC, and provisional cast on, make a chain of 58 (62, 62, 64, 66, 66, 66). Using smaller dpns, pick up 56 (60, 62, 64, 66, 66, 68),then join to begin working in the round. K 8 rows, then remove waste yarn and transfer sts to spare dpns. Fold hem with WS touching and bottom sts behind top sts. K both sets of sts together, using larger dpns. It is easier to knit one dpn at a time, then unraveling the next section, one at a time. Begin stripe pattern, substituting Fair Isle pattern for stripes, k 2 rows $\mathrm{CC}5$ , and k 2 rows CC4 or CC2. When work measures 2 inches, k2tog, k to 2 sts before the end, then ssk. Work 6 rows, then repeat decrease row once. Continue until work measures 6 inches, or stripes match the body stripe pattern. Place 12 (14, 16, 16, 18, 18, 18) sts on waste yarn, 6 (7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10) sts before and after marker. Yoke: Using necessary color, following the stripe pattern, join body to the sleeves. Using larger needles, and starting at the back right shoulder, k across 64, (76, 85, 91, 97, 103, 112) back sts, pm, 44 (46, 46, 48, 48, 48, 50) sts of the left sleeve, pm, 64, (76, 85, 91, 97, 103, 112) of the front, pm and 44 (46, 46, 48, 48, 48, 50) sts of the right sleeve. Pm to begin working in the round. Continue stripe pattern, again substituting Fair Isle pattern, for stripe pattern used on the sleeves. Work for 1.5 inches, then begin raglan decreasing pattern. Neck is separated at the same time the decrease rows are worked. Decreasing row: $\ast\mathbf{k}\,\mathbf{1}$ , k2tog, kto 2 sts before next marker, ssk, sm, repeat from \* 2 more times. Work 3 rows ven, then decreasing row.Repeat this sequence 3 more tims, then work decrease row on every RS row, and purl WS.

To make sure stripes are even, one partial catch up row will be worked. Using the same needle, join new yarn following stripe pattern, work other side of front to the end of the row, at the back right shoulder. Cut yarn and slip back and left sleeve sts to move needle to right front side, where yarn is. Turn work and purl. Work will now be worked back and forth. Continue raglan decreasing and stripe pattern until sleeves have 2 sts left, then bind off.
FINISHING
Using MC and smaller needles, pick up held sts at neck front, then pick up 32 (36, 36, 38, 40, 40, 40) at right front, 22 (32, 42, 45, 51, 57, 64) sts at the back, 32 (36, 36, 38, 40, 40, 40)at the left front, and join together to begin working in the round. $\bf{\ddot{\tau}}K\mathbf{1}$ k2, p2 t0 1 st before the next marker, repeat from 3 times. Knit 3 rows even, then k1, k2tog, p2 to 3 sts before next marker, sk, k1, sm. Repeat decreases all the way around. Work 2 more rows, then bind offloosely in pattern. Weave in ends and graft together held stitches at underarms. Block if desired. Pattern by Serena Murphy $\circledcirc$ August 2008
