numma numma hand-dyed yarn www.numma-numma.com yarn: numma numma the usual, colorway - plum chocolate finished size: 6 (6.5, 7) inches in circumference [unstretched] yardage: 350 (400, 450) yards gauge: 32 stitches and 40 rows per 4" in stockinette on US1 (2.25mm) needles

pattern notes:
pattern was designed to be knit on two circular needles. references to needle one are referring to the needle containing instep stitches. likewise, references to needle two are indicating the needle holding the sole stitches. even with the cables, this sock is quite elastic. the smallest size will comfortably accommodate calf and foot measurements up to eleven inches. even though this pattern looks complicated, it has a nice rhythm and only two cable-cross rows for every sixteen pattern rows. K: knit. p: purl. cast on 72 (76, 80) stitches loosely. divide stitches evenly on two circular needles. [36 (38, 40) stitches each on needles one and two] join in the round being careful not to twist. knit in rib pattern for one inch (approximately 11 rounds) or to desired length.
leg
begin working in cable pattern - using either charted or written directions for the size sock you have selected. work rounds 1-32 of cable pattern twice completely. then work rounds 1-16 once more. [if you wish to have a longer leg, you may want to work additional pattern repeats - simply end having just worked either round 16 or 32 of the cable pattern.] ssk: slip the first stitch knitwise, slip the second stitch purlwise, knit the slipped stitches together. yo: yarn over. k2tog: knit two stitches together. c4b: slip two stitches to the cable needle in back of work, knit next two stitches, knit stitches from cable needle. c4f: slip two stitches to the cable needle in front of work, knit next two stitches, knit stitches from cable needle. sl: slip stitch purlwise with yarn held in back [unless otherwise noted]. p2tog: purl two stitches together. heel flap [worked over 36 (38, 40) stitches on needle 2] row 1 (ws): now working back and forth, sll, work the stitches as they appear - knitting the knit stitches and purling the purl stitches to the last stitch then sll. row 2 Irsl: work across all stitches as thev appear - knittina the knit stitches and purlina the burl stitches. repeat rows 1 and 2 a total of twelve (thirteen, thirteen) times. then work row 1 once more. dutch heel row 1 (rs): k23 (24, 26), ssk, turn work. row 2 (ws): sll, p10 (10, 12), p2tog, turn work. row 3: sl1, k10 (10, 12), ssk, turn work. row 4: sll, p10 (10, 12), p2tog, turn work. repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel stitches have been worked. [12 (12, 14) stitches remain] gusset knit across remaining heel stitches on needle two. with the point of needle two, pick up and knit 13 (14,14) stitches along the side of the heel flap. [this should work out to be one stitch picked up in each of the slipped stitches and then one stitch picked up in the gap between the beginning of the heel flap and the instep stitches.] work across instep stitches on needle one in row 17 of the cable pattern. if you knit the leg of your sock longer and stopped knitting with row 32 of the cable pattern, you will start knitting the instep with row 1 of the cable pattern.] then again, with the point of needle two, pick up and knit 13 (14,14) stitches along the side of the heel flap. [this should work out to be one stitch picked up in each of the slipped stitches and then one stitch picked up in the gap between the beginning of the heel flap and the instep stitches.] if you need to pick up an extra stitch or two, that is just fine. you wil just need to do a few more decreases to get back to your original stitch count when you work your gusset shaping. knit 6 (7, 8) stitches - you may wish to place a marker here because this spot is now the beginning of the round.
set up gusset
knit 6 (7, 8) stitches. then knit the next 13 (14, 14) stitches through the back loop. [these are the stitches that were picked up on the last round; this will twist and tighten the stitches a bit.] then work across the instep stitches on needle one in the next round of the cable pattern stitch. [this will be either row 18 or 2 of your pattern, depending on where you stopped knitting the leg of your sock.] then knit the first 13 (14, 14) stitches on needle two through the back loop. [again, to twist and tighten.] knit 6 (7, 8) stitches to the end Of the round.
shape gusset
with a dutch heel, you do not do as many decreases as is typical of a sock with a heel flap. at this point, you have 36 (38, 40) stitches on needle on for the instep, and you will have 38 (40, 42) stitches on needle two for the sole of your sock. you will only need to do one decrease round in order to get back to your original stitch count on needle two. [if you picked up more stitches around the heel flap, you will need to do an additional decrease round or two. to do this, simply work the decrease round below, then a row with no decreases - alternating in this way until you have 36 (38, 40) stitches on needle two.] decrease round: knit to last three stitches on needle two, k2tog, kl. work across instep stitches on needle one in the next row of the cable pattern. knit the first stitch on needle two, ssk, knit to end of round. 2011 numma numma llc this pattern cannot be reproduced without permission from numma numma llc.if you can use this pattern to produce items for sale and make money knitting - go for it! for help with reprints of this pattern or for technical assistance, please contact us at info@numma-numma.com. foot work the foot as established - working the sole stitches in plain stockinette (knitting every row) and working the instep stitches in the cable pattern - until the foot of your sock is approximately two inches shy of the desired length ending having just worked either row 16 or 32 of the cable pattern stitch. work across remaining sole stitches. now the beginning of your rounds will start with the instep stitches on needle one. toe round 1 (decrease round): beginning on needle one; p1, ssk, work in rib pattern as the stitches appear (knitting the knit stitches and purling the purl stitches) to the last three stitches on needle one, k2tog, p1. then on needle two, kl, ssk, knit to last three stitches on needle two, k2tog, k1. round 2: on needle one, work in rib pattern as the stitches appear (knitting the knit stitches and purling the purl stitches). on needle two, knit all stitches. working even and making no decreases. repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are 48 (52, 56) stitches remaining. work round 1 only (decreasing every round) until there are 24 (28, 32) stitches remaining. holding needles one and two together with an equal number of stitches on each needle, graft remaining stitches using kitchener stitch. weave in ends. knit second sock.
