yarn: numma numma hearty [shown in frosting]
needles: Us7 (4.5 mm needles); 16 inch circular and dpns finished size: to fit an average adult head. yardage: approx. 200 yards gauge: 5 stitches and 7 rows per inch in stockinette on Us7 (4.5 mm) needles
pattern notes:

pattern is designed to begin on a sixteen inch circular needle and to switch to dpns when decreasing demands so. however, you may knit the entire hat on dpns. it is completely up to you. the pattern stitch here is very stretchy. the sample hats fit my ten year old daughter and my husband (of course, the hat is less slouchy on a bigger head). if you have a larger head, you can probably use the same band size - just increase to more stitches when you begin the body portion. be sure to increase in multiples of twelve (so increase to 132 or 144) this will make the decreasing rounds work out for you until the last decrease round - you may have an extra stitch to pull the tail through. if you knit a bigger hat, you will need more than 200 yards. using your circular needle, cast on 96 stitches loosely. join in the round placing a marker to indicate the beginning of the round and being careful not to twist your knitting.
band
knit in pattern stitch for three inches or until hat band is the desired length, ending with round two or four. increase round: \*(knit 4, make 1); repeat from \* to end of round. [120 stitches] body knit every round until the hat measures eight inches (20 cm) from cast on edge or until the body of the hat is the desired length.
