Size: 18 -36 months Materials: Lilly Sugar'n Cream Solids 100 % cotton (2.5 oz/71g/120yd) - 2 skeins Warm Brown, 2 1/2 skeins White, 1 skein Jute, 1 skein Orange, 6 5/8" buttons Needles: US 6(4.00mm), US 7(4.5mm), US 6 (4.00mm) circular needles, tapestry needle Gauge: 19 sts x 28 rows = 4"x 4" with US 7 needles
Notes:
1. To make a bigger jacket or if you're using different yarn, you can increase the number of stitches by repeating the 12 stitches highlighted on the chart as many times as you need to. To make a longer jacket, increase the number of rows in White before and after the Moose and Flower motif. Remember to re-center the Moose and Flower chart if you changed the number of stitches. 2. The jacket is knitted front and back together until you get to armhole decreases. 3. The first and the last stitches of the piece are selvage stitches. You don't need to include them in the pattern. These are just used for joining parts of the jacket together and picking up stitches for the bands. (I usually slip the first stitch and purl the last one.) 4. The main technique for color knitting is Fair Isle. For Moose and Flower motif use Intarsia, you could also add this design later with a Duplicate stitch. 5. Sleeves: As you reach the starry area in White and Jute to avoid long floats of yarn on the wrong side, catch up the unused strand every 2 or 3 stitches.
BODY
With Warm Brown and smaller needles CO 121 sts and knit a rib (knitl, purl1) for 1 34 “(4.5 cm). Change to larger needles and continue in Stockinet stitch following the chart, beginning with 30 sts of right front (including 1 selvage stitch), continuing with 61 sts of back, and finishing with 30 sts of left front. Shaping Armholes: After you complete Row 46 of the chart, knit as follows: knit 30 sts of Right Front and put these sts on a stitch holder, BO next 3 sts, then continue the chart for 58sts. Put the remaining sts of Left Front on a sts holder. You will finish the back part first. Turn your work. BO 3 sts, knit to the end. Turn. Knit the row to the end. Turn. Decrease 1 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows (49 sts remaining). Continue straight following the Chart. However, at the beginning of the next 2 rows, make a YO, which in the following row you are going to purl through the back loop (to avoid making a hole) if you're knitting a wrong side row, or knit through the back loop, if you're working on the right side row (51 sts total). These two sts are the selvage stitches. You don't need to incorporate these stitches into the pattern, you will use them to sew in the sleeves later. Continue according to the chart, shaping the back neck as shown. Now you can either BO shoulder sts or put them on a sts holder, if you prefer to use a 3 needle BO or graft the shoulders (15 sts - each shoulder). Right Front: Attach yarn from the inside of the right piece (WS), and continue as follows: BO 3 sts, knit to the end of the row. Turn. Knit next row straight. Turn. (Decrease 1 sts at the beginning of the row by p2tog, follow the chart to the end of the row. Turn your work and knit the row to the end. Turn.)\* Repeat \* 2 more times. Continue straight. At the same time at the beginning of the next row (WS), make YO. Knit this YO through the back loop at the end of the next RS row (25 sts total). (Selvage stitch). Follow the chart, shaping neck as shown. BO shoulder stitches, or put them on a stitch holder (15 sts total). Left Front: Attach yarn from the inside of the left piece (RS), and continue as follows: BO 3 sts, knit following the chart to the end. Turn. (Follow the chart to the end of the row. Turn. Decrease 1 sts by ssk, finish the row. Turn.)\* Repeat \* 2 more times. Knit the next row to the end. At the beginning of the next row (RS), make YO, knit to the end. At the end of the following row, purl the YO through the back loop (25sts total). (Selvage stitch). Continue straight, shaping the neck as shown. BO shoulder stitches, or put them on a stitch holder (15 sts total).
SLEEVES
Make 2. With Warm Brown and smaller needles CO 28 sts and knit a rib (knit 1, purl1) for about 1 5/8" (4 cm). In the last WS row increase 8 sts evenly (36 sts). Change to larger needles and continue Chart D, increasing 1 sts at the beginning and the end of every 6" row 3 times and every 4" row 5 times (52sts). Shape Cap: BO 3 sts at beg of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at the beginning of the next 6 rows. (40 sts) Knit 2 more rows. BO all stitches.
Assembly
Join the shoulder seams, sew in the sleeves. Finish the sleeve seams. Right band: With Warm Brown and smaller needles pick up approx. 58 sts and knit a rib (knit 1, purl 1) for about 1 1%4" BO all stitches. Left band: Begin as for the right band. Only after three rows of the rib, make 5 buttonholes (by doing 1YO and ssk the next two sts). The first one should be about 34" from the edge, and the bottom one about an inch from the bottom. Distribute the other three in between evenly. Knit 3 more rows of the rib. BO all stitches. Neck band: With Warm Brown and US6 circular needles pick up about 24sts along the top of the right band and the right half, 26 sts along the back part and 24 sts along the left half and the top of left band (74 sts total). Knit (knit 1, purl1) rib for about 1 1%4". Make one more buttonhole placing it above the other buttonholes on the left band, about 1/2"’ from the top of the neck band. BO all stitches. Weave in any loose ends. Sew on the buttons. NB When printing out the charts, please, select LANDSCAPE as your Page Setup
