Just the right pattern for a beginner. Knit in the round with large needles and bulky yarn. Fast, useful, and perfect for men or women. The hat is very stretchy and willfit a variety of head sizes. You can roll the brim up or down to shorten or lengthen it too.

Materials:

35 1 Skein Springvale Bulky (98 yds) by Three Irish Girls. (Model color is Some Enchanted Evening.) 35 Size US 10, 16" Circular Knitting Needles or size needed to get gauge. 35 Set of Double Point Needles (dpn) in same size. 35 Large eye yarn or tapestry needle, Scissors, Tape measure Gauge: 15 sts in 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch Finished size: 21 %2" circumference++ Key: CO - cast on; M - marker; PM - place marker; st(s)- stitch(es); K - knit; sl - slip; k2tog - knit two stitches together; rnd - round;

Hat Body: Using ThumbLoop(or yourfavorite CO)method and circular needle, CO 0 sts. PM and Join, beng carefulnotto twist. K all sts Continue to k allsts; sl m as you come to it each rnd; until hat, loosely unrolled, is 7 12"\* Crown Decrease: (change to dpn when necessary.) Rnd 1: (K 6, k2tog) 10 times - 70 sts Rnd 2: K even around Rnd 3: (K 5, k2tog) 10 times - 60 sts Rnd 4: K even around Rnd 5: (K 4, k2tog) 10 times - 50 sts Rnd 6: K even around Rnd 7: (K 3, k2tog) 10 times - 40 sts Rnd 8: K even around Rnd 9: (K 2, k2tog) 10 times - 30 sts Rnd 10: K even around Rnd 11: (K 1, k2tog) 10 times - 20 sts Rnd 12: (k2tog) 10 times - 10 sts Rnd 13: (k2tog) - 5 sts Break yarn leaving a 12" tail Using tapestry needle thread yarn through remaining stitches and pul closed. Work tail to inside of hat and weave in the loose end.

++Note:

You can change the circumference of your hat by changing your gauge. 14 sts in 4" = 23"; 16 sts in 4" = 20"; 17 sts in 4" =19" (all sizes are rounded to nearest % inch). Count the number of stitches you get in 4 inches (A). A ÷ 4 (B). 80 ÷ B for circumference of hat (C). Example: 16 sts in 4 inches (A). 16 ÷ 4 = 4 (B). 80 ÷ 4 = 20 (C). You wil have a 20" circumference hat. \*You can add length to your hat, if desired, by kniting more than 7 12" prior to decrease rounds.
