GAUGE
26sts/36 rows $=4^{\circ}$ in Stockinette St While gauge is not crucial in this pattern, using a heavier yarn will result in a larger shawl.
NOTES & TECHNIQUES
The shawl is worked from the edging up to the neck. The first and last 3 sts of every row are knitted, creating a garter stitch edge. If a wool yarn is used and then wet-blocked, this will produce a larger shawl. To make it easier to keep track of the pattern, place a stitch marker at the beginning of each repeat.

SHAWL
Cast on 391 sts. Knit 2 rows. Keeping first and last 3 sts in garter st, work edging for 20 rows. Remove any stitch markers if placed around pattern repeats. Knit 1 row. Place stitch marker on each side of the center stitch of the $^\mathrm{5th}$ $\mathtt{10t h}$ and 15th repeats. Knit one row, decreasing across row so that each of the four sections between the stitch markers has 94 sts: 379 sts (94 in each section plus the 3 marked sts). Begin decs: Rows 1, 3 and 5 (RS): K3, skp, \*k to 2 sts before marker, skp, sm, pl, sm, k2tog. Repeat from \* to last 5 sts, end k2tog, k3. Rows 2 and 4 (wS): K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Row 6 (WS): \*K to marker, sm, pl, sm. Repeat from \* across row. Repeat these 6 rows until there are 10 sts in each section. Change to garter st and work remaining decs on RS as follows: skp, \*k to 2 sts before marker, skp, sm, pl, sm, k2tog. Repeat from \* to last 2 sts, k2tog until 11 sts remain. Bind off all sts.
FINISHING
Work in loose ends. Block. For fine weight cotton, blocking with a steam iron is recommended. For Wool, wet block.
