The Tam by Leanne Brown
Tams are fun project to knit and wear. They are a good look for a variety of face shapes. The Tam uses 4 colors to create the eye-catching motifs. Worsted weight wool is used and there are a total of 60 rows so it's a fairly fast knit. The finished diameter after blocking 11" - 12" Yarn: Worsted Weight Wool (example shows Cascade 220, Brown Sheep Nature Spun, and Paton's Classic Wool) Needles: 16" circular US 7, Set of 5 dpn US 7(or size needed to get gauge), 16" circular US 6 (or one size smaller than gauge needles.) Gauge: 20 sts and 24 rows in stranded pattern You'll be happier with your Tam if it fits. Take the time to do a gauge swatch.

Other: 11 to 12 inch diameter tam blocker or plate, tapestry needle. Directions: ular needles and Raven, CO 108. PM, Join, being careful not to twist, for knitting in the round Rounds 1 - 10: Work the18 st, twisted rib repeat, six times; ([K1tbl, p1] 9 times) 6 times Round 11: Change to larger needles and ([kfb, k2] 6 times) 6 times (144 sts) Rounds 12 - 38: work in stst following color changes in 24 st chart repeat 6 times Round 39: [Work across 22 sts of repeat, then s2tog-k1-p2sso] 6 times\* 12 sts decreased. Rounds 40 - 60: continue working chart as established. You will work the double decrease on every other round, Break yarn and thread through remaining 12 sts. Pull to close. Weave in all yarn tails. Wash tam with tepid water and wool wash of your choice according to manufacturers instructions. Gently press excess water from tam. I like to roll my knits in a towel to do this. Be gentle so you don't felt the wool. Carefully streatch tam over form or plate and center the crown. Flip the form over, and gently push the body of the tam away from the edges and toward the center. This will keep the brim from stretching out of shape. Take care not to overstreatch the tam and distort the stitches. Flip the form back over and rest on an elevated stand (I use a glass) and allow to dry away from direct sunlight and drafts. Once tam is dry, carefully remove from form and proudly wear your creation.
\*Note:
The double decrease (DD) uses the first stitch of the next repeat. You should count this k stitch as stitch one on subsuquent repeats. example: look at st 23 in round 39. This is the DD. You will slip st 23 and 24 together then K the next st (which happens to be the first st of the next repeat) and p2sso. You have begun the next repeat and your next st will be st 2. the round will use the first st of the next round. Remove the marker, work the st, replace marker
