Convertibly Cute
by Au fil des jours

This is a modification of the ever popular Fetching fingerless mitts, to make child size convertible mitts/mittens with worsted weight yarn. In fact, it's a mash-up that includes elements from two other patterns also: the decreases for the mitten top are based on Marcia Lewandowski's Minnesota Mittens, and the name is a nod to Fetchingly Cute Mittens by Krystal Grams. Size: 7 -10 year old Gauge: 16 1%2 - 17 sts and 24-25 rows = 10 cm - 4 inches Yarn: Karabella Aurora 8 (worsted weight, machine washable) \*this yarn can stretch a lot with washing, consider a gauge swatch! Needles: 5mm (US 8) or as needed for gauge. Make Fetching mitts, following directions through picot bind off and beginning the thumb, with the following modifications: ·Cast on only 30 st instead of 45 After the third cable round, work 9 rounds before starting the thumb. For the thumb, set aside 5 rather than 7 st, and pick up 1 st on each side rather than 2, plus the 5 stitches below and 5 above, for a total of 12 thumb stitches.
Thumb:
Continue the thumb as established, working in stockinette stitch in the round, for 12 rounds. Then decrease as follows: 1st decrease round: (k2, k2tog) 3 times (9 st). 2nd decrease round: (k1, k2tog) 3 times (6 st). Break yarn & draw through remaining stitches.
Flip top:
Cast on 14 st. Joining snugly, pick up and knit 14 from the 2nd rounds above the thumb opening, across the back of the hand, by knitting into the right side of the kni loops, and into the top bump of the purls. 1st round: (K4, p1) twice, k8, (p1, k4) twice. 2nd round: (K4, p1) twice, k3, kfb, (k4, p1) twice, k3, kfb. 3rd-4th rounds: Continue in 4x1 rib. 5th round, work a cable round on the palm side only, continuing 4x1 rib on the back of the hand. 6th-18th rounds: Continue in 4x1 rib. 19th round: (k2, k2 tog, p1) 6 times (24 st). 20th round: (k3, p1) 6 times. 21st round: (k1, k2 tog) 6 times (18 st). 22nd round: (k2, p1) 6 times. 23rd round: (k2 tog, p1) 6 times (12 st). 24th round: (ssk) 6 times (6 st). Break yarn & draw through remaining stitches. Work in all ends.
