LiPSTicK Pizza Preemie Cap Pattern: A Cat Bordhi Inspired, Top-Down, Cable Knit Design for Newborns or Fruit Protection

LiPSTicK Pizza Preemie caP

This pattern is named after the colorway "Lipstick Lava" by Dream in Color and the "Pizza Toe Cast-On" by Cat Bordhi. I started working on this just after taking a week-long workshop with Cat Bordhi on her Personal Footprints approach to socks (using the very leftovers from my Discovery Socks), so this is very Cat inspired. The result is a very small hat. It fits on an average-sized apple. It could double as a fruitprotector if your produce needs some cushioning in your lunch bag.

Dream in Color Smooshy or other leftover sock yarn. US 2 - 2.75 mm Needles (two 12" or 16" circulars or one 40" circular)

PATTERN NOTES

This little cap is knit from the top down much like a toe-up sock. It uses Cat's Pizza-Toe cast on which increases at a rate of 6 stitches on each increase round. Once the increases are all worked, there are alternating columns of simple cables that spin in the same direction as the pizza slice curves. Cable-Needleless Cross 2 Left (C4F): Insert right needle into back loops of 3rd and 4th stitches from the right of the left needle, leting Ist and 2nd stitches on left needle fall off and passing 3rd and 4th stitches to right needle. Use left needle to pick up the two loose stitches. Replace the passed 3rd and 4th stitches from the right needle to the left needle. Knit 4 stitches. Cable complete. You can do this with a cable needle if you'd prefer.
