EQUINOX? design by Amy E. Andersol

This vest reminds me of autumn, when the seasons are changing and we're all getting reacquainted with our woolies. I may be dreading winter, but my sweaters are like old friends, and I'm glad to climb back into them. Every kniter's repertoire should include a basic vest; one that never goes out of style. This design is quick and easy to knit - appropriate for an advanced beginner. It will look great with jeans or khakis for an afternoon barbecue, football game, or a day of picking apples. Directions are given for size Medium, with Large and X-Large in parentheses. If only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. Materials: Peace Fleece, 4, (5, 6) skeins 3 buttons, size $\%^{\mathfrak{s}}$ or 7/8" Needles: Size 6, 16" and $29^{\circ}$ circular - or size needed to obtain gauge Gauge: 9 sts $=2^{\ast}$ in stockinette Finished Chest Measurement: 36" (45" 52") hlocked Note: This vest is knit in one piece to the armholes. Seed Stitch (over an odd # of stitches): Every row: K1, $^{\star}\mathsf{P}\,^{\star}$ , $\mathsf{K}1^{\star}$ ,repeat $\star_{-}\star$ to end of row. (You will always be knitting the puri sts and purling the knit sts.) Body: With $^{29^{\ast}}$ circular needle, cast on 155 (189, 223) sts. Work 5 rows of seed stitch, placing markers as follows: Work 6, PM for button band, work 31 (39,47), PM for armhole, work 81 (99,117), PM for armhole, work 31 (39, 47), PM for button band, work 6. Begin increases as follows: Row 1 (RS): Work 6 sts in seed st., then K1, inc. 1 in next st., Knit to last 8 sts in row, then inc. 1 in next st., K1, work last 6 sts in seed st. Row 2 (wS): Work 6 sts in seed st., purl to last 6 sts of row, work last 6 sts in seed st. Work Rows 1 and 2, 7 (8, 9) times total. (You wil have 44 (53,62) sts each for right front and left front.) Work short row section as follows: Row 1 (Short row): Work the first 6 sts in seed st., slip 1 st with yarn in front, move yarn to back, then slip that 1 st. from the right needle back to the left. Turn, so WS is facing, and work back over the 6 sts in seed st. Row 2 (RS): Work 6 sts in seed, Knit to last 6 sts, work 6 sts in seed. Row 3 (Short row): Work another short row, as above. Row 4 (WS): Make first buttonhole as follows: Work 6 sts in seed, purl to last 6 sts, work 2 sts in seed, BO the next 2 sts, then work the 1 remaining st. in seed. Row 5 (RS): Work 2 sts, Cast on 2 sts to replace the 2 sts bound off, work 2 more sts in seed, Knit to last 6 sts, work last 6 sts in seed. Row 6 (WS): Work 6 sts in seed, purl to last 6 sts, then work last 6 sts in seed. Row 7 (Short row): Work another short row, as above. Row 8 (RS): Work 6 sts in seed, Knit to last 6 sts, work 6 sts in seed. Row 9 (Short row): Work another short row, as above. Row 10 (Ws): Work 6 sts in seed, purl to last 6 sts, then work last 6 sts in seed. Now, you can work even, keeping the first and last 6 stitches in seed, for the button band. When you are $1\%"$ , $(2^{1}/4^{"},~~2^{3}/4^{"})$ from the first buttonhole, work another buttonhole, as above (Rows 4 and 5). Continue working even until you are $1\,^{1}/2^{"}$ $(2^{\mathfrak{p}},\,2^{\mathfrak{q}}/2^{\mathfrak{p}})$ from the $2^{\ n d}$ butonhole, ending so that theext rwwillhave RS facing. Work rows 1-10 of the short row section again, creating your third, and last buttonhole. Next row: Begin working neck decreases as follows: Row 1 (RS): Work 6 sts in seed, K1, SSK, Knit to last 9 sts, K2tog, K1, work 6 sts in seed. Row 2 : Work even, as established, with first 6 sts and last 6 sts in seed. Next Row - Begin armhole decreases as follows: Work even as established until 7 (8. 9) sts before the armhole marker, K the next 14 (16, 18) sts and then slip them onto a holder for underarm, K across the back until 7 (8, 9) sts before the other armhole marker, slip the back stitches onto a piece of scrap yarn, knit the next 14 (16, 18) sts and slip them onto a holder for underarm, work to the end of the row as established. Note: You can work both sides simultaneously, but it will be less confusing if the sides are worked one at a time. Left Front: Work 1 WS row as established. Work armhole and neck decreases simultaneously, as follows: Row 1 (RS): K1, SSK, K to last 9 sts, K2tog, K1, work 6 sts in seed. Row 2: Work 6 sts in seed, purl to end of row. Row 3: (RS): K1, SSK, K to last 6 sts, work last 6 sts in seed. Row 4: Work 6 sts in seed, purl to end of row. Work Rows 1-4: 4 (6, 7) times total. After that, continue working decreases at the button band only on every $4^{\mathrm{th}}$ row, untilyou have a total of 14 (16, 20) sts remaining. Continue even until body measures 22" (23", 25"), ending so that last row worked is a wS row. Slip all sts onto a holder.

Right Front:

Work 1 WS row as established. Work armhole and neck decreases simultaneously, as follows: Row 1 (RS): Work 6 sts in seed, K1, SSK, Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. Row 2: Purl to last 6 sts, work 6 in seed. Row 3: (RS): Work 6 sts in seed, Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. Row 4: Purl to last 6 sts, work 6 in seed. Work Rows 1-4: 4 (6, 7) times total. After that, continue working decreases at the button band only on every $4^{\mathrm{th}}$ row, until you have a total of 14, (16, 20) sts remaining. Continue even until body measures 22" (23", 25"), ending so that last row worked is a WS row. Slip all sts onto a holder.

Duy a!!iuiv uuuicuou ao iuluwo. Row 1 (RS): K1, SSK, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. Row 2 (WS): Purl. Work Rows 1-2: 8 (12, 14) times total. Work even in stockinette stitch until back measures 21" (22", 24"), ending so that next row wilhave RS facing. Begin back neck detail as follows: Row 1: Knit 11 (13, 17), work the next 29 (33, 37) sts in seed (beginning with a purl st.), knit 11 (13, 17). Row 2: Purl 10 (12, 16) work the next 31 (35, 39) in seed, purl 10 (12, 16). Row 3: Knit 9 (11, 15) work the next 33 (37, 41) in seed, knit 9 (11, 15). Row 4: Purl 8 (10, 14) work the next 35 (39, 43) in seed, purl 8 (10, 14). Row 5: Knit 8 (10, 14) work the next 35 (39, 43) in seed, knit 8 (10, 14). Row 6: Purl 8 (10, 14) work 6 in seed, BO the next 23 (27, 31) in seed, work 6 in seed, purl 8 (10, 14). Slip shoulder sts onto holders.

Knit together and bind off the shoulder seams on wS, asfollows:

Slip one set of front shoulder sts onto one needle. Slip one set of the back shoulder sts onto another needle. Hold these two needles so that the RS are together and you're looking at the WS. Using a $3^{\mathsf{r d}}$ neede, knit together and bind off as follows: Insert needle through 1 st. on the front needle and 1 st. on the back needle, and knit these 2 sts together. Repeat for the next st. on the front and back needle, then lift the first st. on the right needle over the $2^{\ n d}$ st. to bind off, as you would in ordinary knitting. Continue working in this manner to the end of the row.

Armhole Edgings:

With RS facing and $16"$ circular needle, PU 14 (16, 18) sts from underarm holder, PU 52 (52, 54) sts before shoulder seam, PU 52 (52, 54) sts after shoulder seam. You will have 118 (120. 126) sts total. Note: As a general rule, you want to pick up about 3 sts for every 4 rows. First round: Work (k1, p1, k2tog, p1) 7 times, then (k1, p1) 31(32, 35) times, then work (k1, p1, k2tog, p1) 4 times, end with k1. You will have a total of 107 (109, 115) sts total. Work 5 more rounds in seed stitch. (Begin the next round with a purl stitch - after that you will work k1, p1 continuously) Next round: BO all sts in seed stitch. Repeat for other armhole.

Finishing:

Block vest by laying it flat between 2 damp towels. Let sit overnight. Sew buttons in place.
