Quadrat Shawl/Vest

On a cool evening I like to wrap a large shawl around my shoulders. To avoid it from slipping off, I added two armholes and created a vest. As I like straight lines and order, this checkerboard pattern is perfect for a large shawl.

Pattern Notes:
The shawl is worked from side to side, beginning with the shorter edge. The shawl is framed by a seed stitch border. The body of the shawl consists of alternating knit and purl squares. Each square is 10 stitches wide and 15 rows high. (Depending on your gauge, less rows or more rows could form a square). Seedstitch Row 1: \*K1, P1, K1, P1.... Repeat from \* to end of row Row 2: \*P1, K1, P1, K1... Repeat from \* to end of row Repeat rows 1 and 2 Knit Square (stockinette) Knit 10 stitches on RS, purl on WS (15 rows) Purl Square (reverse stockinette) Purl 10 stitches on RS, knit on WS (15 rows)
Directions:
Cast on 172 stitches. Rows 1-15: - seedstitch pattern.
Body:
Each row begins and ends with 11 stitches in seedstitch pattern, the “border'. In between the border, you have 150 stitches which are divided into 15 alternating knit squares and purl squares (10 stitches each) knitted 15 rows high, then the pattern and sequence of the squares is reversed. The border stitches (11 at beginning and 11 at end of each row) continue in seedstitchpattern. (\*see for more detailed notes at end of document) Continue with the pattern for 12 squares height, (approx.. 24" /61cm) from cast-on edge.
Armholes:
Working 7 rows into a square pattern sequence choose one side of your project for the armhole. In your 7th row, knit border, knit (or purl depending on your pattern sequence) first square, bind off 40 stitches, continue in checkerboard pattern to end, knit border. In the return row, knit border, continue in checkerboard pattern until you reach the bound off stitches, cast on the 40 stitches again and continue in checkerboard pattern. Continue with the pattern for 10 squares height (approx., 23"/58cm) and repeat same step for second armhole on the same side of your project. Work checkerboard for another 12 squares height (approx.. 22"/60cm). Finish with the border of 15 rows in seedstitch pattern. Bind off. Weave in ends. Block shawl/vest lightly to even out the squares. Final measurements on my finished project are: 39"x71" (100cmx180cm). It is a large shawl/vest. Fortunately, this pattern can be adjusted by reducing the number of squares to achieve a smaller size shawl/vest.

Detailed description of checkerboard pattern by rows: Row 16: - knit \*border, \*knit 10, purl 10, - repeat 13 more times, knit 'border'. Row 17: - knit "border', \*purl 10, knit 10, - repeat 13 more times, knit "border. So in the return rows, you purl the purls and knit the knit stitches (except the border stitches) Repeat these rows until you have a total of 15 rows. Reverse Body pattern to create the checkerboard pattern. I hope you enjoy knitting and wearing this shawl/vest.
