Spring Wood Shawl Knitting Pattern by Denisg E. M. Bartels: Detailed Instructions and Charts for a Large Crescent Shawl

Spring Wood Shawl

By Denisg E. M. Bartels Yarn - Lace weight. I used Madelinetosh Prairie. Yardage - Approximately 1550 yards. Heedles - I used size 2 (3.0 mm) needles but I knit very loosely. Depth at Center - Approximately 36 inches. This shawl is a large crescent that is knit from the top down. It is not as complicated as it looks. All the leaf motifs are the same. They are gathered in branches that are all the same though the twigs between them vary. The uneven distribution of increases over the whole shawl causes distortions in the leaf and branch shapes which I quite like. The branches are arranged in overlapping rows. The first row has two branches, the second has four, the third has eight, and the fourth has ten branches. The shawl has a top edging of seed stitch and two body sections that are divided by a single knit stitch that forms the spine of the shawl. The chart for the body sections is divided up so that you only need to deal with two sheets of paper at any time and so the symbols are large enough for those of us with imperfect eyesight.

I used a tab beginning to this shawl. Tast on 5 stitches using the an invisible/provisional cast on. I used Barbara Walker's. Rows 1 - 5 : k1, pl, kl, pl, kl. Set up for edging, body, spine, body, edging. Row 6 : k1, p1, kl, p1, k1, Pick up 3 stitches along the edge and then k1, pl, k1, pl, k1 the 5 stitches from the cast on for a total of 13 Stitch. Row 7 : k1l, pl, k1, pl, kl, yo, pl, yo, pl, yo, pl, yo, kl, pl, kl, pl, k1. The charts start at this point. As the rows get longer, the charts are broken up into more pieces so that they remain readable. Charts with the same chart number are all part of the same set of rows and are knit in alphabetical order (e.g., the first part of row 44 is on chart 2a, then knit the row 44 on chart 2b and finish the row on chart 2c) as laid out below. Tll even rows start with kl, p1, kl, pl, k1 which isfolowed by the chart row, kl, chart row again, and finish with kl, pl, kl, pl, k1. Tll odd rows are k1, p1, k1, pl, k1, pul to last 5 stitches,k1, pl, k1, pl, k1. Double yarns overs on the previous row should be purled in the front and knit in the back of the stitch. I used a Russian bind off I have also included alternate charts for rows 12 through 189 showing the large repeats in these rows as opposed to the main set of charts that give the entire rows (it was easier for me to design this way). They should knit up identical to the original charts but I have not actually knit to them. In addition I have also include the written instructions for these rows mostly for the repeat counts of all of those yo decrease pairs. Again I have not knit the shawl using these instructions. Blocking is a bit fidley because of the uneven increases. I found it easiest to pin the center spine (a straight blocking wire is a big help here) and then work from there outwards along the bottom edge lining up the branches as I went. I used flexible wires for the top and bottoms edges and by the time I had the bottom edged pined the top had pretty much blocked itself Note that some of the leaves Won't be totally flat.
