Stacked Rib
By Kate Poe Ribbed socks with a 16 row pattern that creates alternating columns of ribbing. The pattern is toe up and includes a short row heel and a wedge toe. Feel free to substitute your favorite heel or toe. An expanded pattern, including additional sizes and cuff down directions is available as part of the ebook, Ark Socks. Size: Adult Med, 8 inch circumference. Size may be additionally adjusted by adding or subtracting stitches in multiples of 8. Yarn: Fingering weight yarn, Wool or wool blend, 300-400 yards. Shown in Holiday Yarns Sock Flock. Needles: US 1 (2.25 mm), or size needed for gauge. Directions
Using the Figure 8 or Turkish method, cast on 20 stitches. nit 10, place marker, k 10, place EOR marker. Divide stitches evenly among needles Round 1: [K1, M1L, knit to 1 stitch before next marker, M1R, k1] x 2 Round 2: Knit all stitches Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are a total of 64 stitches. End having worked round 2. Knit one round. Next round: Work rib pattern for foot across 32 stitches, k 32 stitches. Continue working rib pattern across 32 stitches and knitting the remaining stitches until the sock is approximately 2 inches less than desired length. Note which pattern round was just completed.
Heel
Work 32 stitches in pattern, k 31 stitches. Slip last stitch pw wyif. Turn. Row 2: Slip 1 pw wyif. P 30, slip 1 stitch pw wyib. Turn Row 3: Slip 1 pw wyib, knit to 1 stitch before slipped stitch of previous row, slip 1 stitch pw wyif. Turn. Row 4: Slip 1 pw wyif, p to 1 stitch before slipped stitch of previous row, slip 1 stitch pw wyib. Turn. Repeat rows 3 & 4 until 10 stitches remain in the center, ending having worked row 4. Row 5: Slip 1 pw wyib, knit to slipped stitch of previous row, insert right needle into the wrap and place on left needle, knit wrap and stitch together, slip next stitch pw wyif. Turn. Row 6: Slip 1 pw wyif, p to slipped stitch of previous row, insert right needle into the wrap and place on left needle, p wrap and stitch together, slip next stitch pw wyib. Turn. Repeat rows 5 & 6 until one slipped stitch remains unworked on each side, ending with row 6. Next row: Slip 1 pw wyib, knit to slipped stitch of previous row, insert right needle into the wrap and place on left needle, knit wrap and stitch together. Do not turn.
Leg
Work across 63 stitches in foot rib pattern. Move the last stitch to the beginning of the round (shifting EOR marker one stitch to the right). Begin working in cuff rib pattern. Continue working all stitches in cuff rib pattern until cuff is about 6 inches (or to desired length). End having worked pattern round 8 or 16. Bind off loosely as desired. Weave in ends.
