Menten Scarf Pattern by Audrey MacDonald: A Variegated Yarn Garter Stitch Scarf Design with Increasing and Decreasing Sections

Menten by Audrey MacDonald

Menten is a simple garter stitch scarf, which will show off a variegated or selfstriping yarn of any weight from 4-ply to Aran. If you want to make sure you use all of your skein of lovely yarn then before you start divide yarn into two balls of equal weight. Knit the first half of the scarf (increasing) until the first ball is used up then the second half (decreasing) using the second ball.

this scarf was knit from 100g/343m of Araucania Ranco Multy (shade 337) on3.25mmneedles

Materials

You will need

yarn: approx 340m of chosen yarn needles: use needles that give a fabric you like; I'd suggest using needles one or two sizes larger than normal for that your yarn; as Menten is knit lengthways it can be knit on straight needles (or back & forth on a circular needle) stitchmarker large-eye blunt ended needle (for sewing in ends)

Dimensions

This scarf is a long, shallow triangle. Exact dimensions will depend on yarn & needles used. Scarf shown is 33 cm deep at centre & 160 cm along longest edge (after blocking).

Note that when counting stitches each double yarn over counts as ONE stitch (NOT two) and when knitting into a yo2 on the next row you knit one stitch, allowing the second loop to drop.

Finishing

Darn in ends. Block scarf (ie soak in lukewarm water for 30 minutes, squeeze out excess water, place on flat surface & shape, pin out points, leave scarf to dry completely). Enjoy.

Maud Leonora Menten

One of the first Canadian women to gain a medical degree, Menten (1879 - 196o) is best known for her research into enzyme kinetics. Together with Leonor Michaelis she developed the Michaelis-Menten equation, a mathematical formula modelling enzyme reaction rates still used by chemists & biochemists.
