CORINNE'S KNITS
Arcus
Description
Arcus is an unusually shaped shawl. I designed it especially for sock yarns with long colour repeats and these are the yarns, which will work best with this design. The top of the shawl is V shaped so that the sides will sit on the shoulders comfortably, without sliding down. Difficuty Intermediate

About The Designer
Corinne's passion for yarn started around age 8 when she started to knit. Today, she especially loves to design with sock yarn. Although French, she lives in Germany with her English partner and their two boys, where she can fully put her second passion, languages, to the test. Her patterns can be found on Ravelry on the Corinne's Knits designer page or on her blog: corinnesknits.wordpress.com. For pattern support, email: corinnesknits@googlemail.com.

Notes
The knitting starts by the centre of the shawl. The octagon is knit in the round. Then, the first "wing" is knit and then the second. The border is knit last by picking up stitches along each "wing" and knitting the remaining octagon stitches. The list of abbreviations used in the pattern is available on the last page.
Stitch Pattern
The centre part of the shawl is knit in stocking stitch in the round, the “wings" in stocking stitch back and forth with a garter stitch border. The lower border is knit in garter stitch.

Octagon Centre
Using size US6/4.0mm round needle (or dpns), cast on 4 sts using toe up magic cast on1 or another cast on of your choice. Rd 1: k Rd 2: \*kfb\* (8 sts) Rd 3: k Rd 4: \*k1, pm, m1\* (16 sts) Rd 5: k Rd 6: \*k to m, sl m, m1\* to last m, sl m, m1, k to end Rd 7: k Rep rds 6 & 7 until you have 30 sts between markers (30 sts in each section for a total of 240 sts), ending with a rd 7. K1, take some scrap yarn and put the next 180 sts (6 sections) on hold on the yarn (lifeline) by using a darning needle. Leave the stich markers on the lifeline. Secure the yarn so that you won't lose your sts. You should now have 60 sts (2 sections) on your needle and you will now work flat (back and forth). You can remove the stitch marker in the middle of your work.
Left Wing
Set up rd: Sl1 pw, p to last 3 sts, k3 Row 1 and all odd rows (rs): k to end Rows 2/4/8/14/16/22/26/28: Sl1 pw, p to last 3 sts, k3 Rows 6/12/18/24: Sl1 pw, p1, p2tog, p to last 3 sts, k3 Rows 10/20: Sl1 pw, p to last 6 sts, p2tog, p1, k3 Row 30: Sl1 pw, p1, p2tog, p to last 6 sts, p2tog, p1, k3 Rep rows 1 to 30 until you have only 7 sts left, ending with a rd 20. Then knit as follows: Rows 1/3/5/7 (rs): k to end Row 2/6: Sl1, p to last 3 sts, k3 Row 4: Sl1, p1, k2tog twice, k1 (5 sts) Row 8: Sl1, k2tog twice (3 sts) Cut yarn and weave through remaining sts. Pull tight
Right Wing
Look at your work from the rs and put the 60 sts (2 sections) immediately to the right of your left wing on your needle. You can leave the lifeline and remove it completely when you are done knitting your shawl. Note: If you want the second wing to match the first one completely, you might have to cut some of your yarn to start at the right colour. This is what I have done with my yarn both when starting this second wing and when changing skein when I finished the first one. The yardage I have indicated takes that into account. Please note however that this is not standard and might "cost" you more yarn, depending on your yarn. Set up rd (ws): k3, p to end Row 1 and all odd rows: Sl1 pw, kto end Rows 2/4/8/14/16/22/26/28: k3, p t0 end Rows 6/12/18/24: k3, p to last 4 sts, p2tog, p2 Rows 10/20: k3, p1, p2tog, p to end Row 30: k3, p1, p2tog, p to last 4 sts, p2tog, p2 Rep rows 1 to 30 until you have only 7 sts left, ending with a rd 20. Then knit as follows: Rows 1/3/5/7: Sl1, k to end Row 2/6: K3, p to end Row 4: K1, k2tog twice, p2 (5 sts) Row 8: K1, k2tog twice (3 sts) Cut yarn and weave through remaining sts. Pull tight
Border
Start at the left wing and pick up 107 sts at the bottom, you should see an easy to identify gap where you have slipped the first sts of every row starting on that side, just pick up 1 st in each gap. When you reach the sts left on the lifeline, put them on another needle, starting on the side of the right wing, they should be ready to knit with the first st the one closest to where you have already picked up your 107 sts. Knit all 120 sts (4 sections) and then pick up another 107 sts on the right wing, the same way you did on the left wing. You should now have a total of 334 sts. Row 1 (ws): k to end Row 2 (rs): k to last 12 sts, w&t Row 3 (ws): k to last 12 sts, w&t Rep the last two rows until you have 8 sets of 12 sts left unknit on each side of the shawl, ending with awsrow. Then, knit 2 rows going all the way to the end of the row. You don't have to pick up the wraps as you encounter them, as they will not be visible in garter stitch. After knitting the 2 rows, cast off very loosely. I like to use a bigger size needle to make sure I do not cast off too tightly.
Finishing
Weave in all ends. If you have used a standard cast on on your octagon centre, don't forget to close the little gap at the centre. Block gently.
