Felting and Finishing
What is felting? Felting, or fulling, is the process of shrinking an animal fiber such as wool until the scales of the fiber stick together and create a solid fabric. Heat, humidity, and friction must all be present to properly felt. (Ever shrunk your favorite wool sweater? Just like that, except we are going to do it intentionally.) Felting is not an exact science. I have included my felting instructions below, however your felting times may vary depending on your yarn, color, dryer temperature, and agitation.
Felting Process:
Once your flats are complete, soak them in super hot water until they are sopping wet. Squeeze them until they are no longer dripping, but you want them wet all the way through. Put them in the dryer with something for agitation - I use 8 tennis balls. Set your dryer to HIGH heat and set timer to 15 minutes. Rewet your flats and reset the timer for 15 minutes. Repeat until your flats are felted to the correct size. Your flats will now look pretty small compared to the size you made, but don't worry wet wool is very stretchy. To shape your flat, stretch it onto your foot and adjust shape until you are satisfied. Carefully remove the flat trying to maintain the shape and air dry. Drying can take a day, or two, or three depending on humidity.
Finishing:
Once your flats are dry, choose a pair of buttons and attach with thread or yarn.
Care:
To wash your flats, wash in cold water, shape, and air dry to prevent further shrinking. As you wear your flats, they will form to your foot and stretch a little. Each time you wash them, they will shrink back to their original size and need to be formed to your foot again.
