Jee-oma cowl

Use your favourite stranded pattern or just be creative and draw your own. The chart is blank for you to print and make your own creation. The cowl is doubleknitted and reversible. Because of the nature of doubleknitting you won't have long strands and the cowl will be stretchy. Any writing will be mirrored on the reverse side!

Cowl
Starting with two-color tubular cast-on, make 120 pairs of stitches for doubleknitting. Pick the first stitch as 'knit' from the finger yarn and with the contrasting color (sample 'red'). Turn and work the first row doubleknitting flat . One square in the chart represents a pair of stitches. First of these sts is knitted with the chart color and the second st is purled with the opposite color, working behind the front yarn. Join to work stitches in-the-round in the end of the first row. Undo the slipknot. Work double stockinette for 24 rounds according to your chart. Work the chart three times for one round. Round 25 is the set-up round for ribbing. The stitch count is decreased to 108 pairs. The decreases are marked in the chart with x. To work double ribbing 12 first stitches (eg. 6pairs) are all knitted, next 12 stitches(6pairs) are all purled and this repeated to the end of the round. Reverse side stitches (ones facing away from you) are always worked behind the facing side yarn. Work the given chart three times for one round. If you want only one colorway to be visible when the ribbing is folded, change MC with CC on round 40, marked with black line. Round 59 is worked as double stockinette. To bind-off the stitches work first the reverse stitches only for one round and then graft the front and back stitches together with kitchener stitch using front yarn. Weave all ends in. You can cast-on and bind-off the cowl also with your favorite style. The techniques named in the pattern will result almost invisible start and finish, because this cast-on and bind-off imitate regular stocking stitch. decrease one pair work cc/mc work mc/cc purl pairs (ribbing) knit pairs (ribbing) Double ribbing: Inside the colored frames six pairs of stitches are all either purled or knitted to produce a reversible double rib. Inside the blue frame both stitches of every pair are purled. Inside the red frame both stitches of every pair are knitted. Reverse side stitches are always worked behind the front side yarn. Double ribbing takes it's shape only after a few inches. The ribbing will have it's final form only after the bind-off.

Tubular Cast-on

Make a slipknot with both yarns together around a needle. Hold both yarns in your left hand. One yarn over your forefinger and the other over your thumb. Holding the needle in your right hand; pick the yarn on your forefinger from below the yarn on your thumb to make the first stitch and then pick the thumb yarn from below the yarn on the forefinger to make the second stitch. Alternate these two'moves' to form pairs of stitches. Make sure that the stitches remain in right order and are close together. In the picture the stitches are very far apart for clarity. The slipknot is neither counted for or worked. You can undo it when you start working in the round.
Decreasing
To make a decrease in double knitting you need to rearrange two pairs to stitches to be worked together (two front and two reverse stitches) into one front and one reverse stitch. You can use a cable needle or follow the instructions below to do the rearranging.

Rearranging the stitches for decreasing without a cable needle: Lift first and third stitch of the left needle with the right needle. Release these lifted stitches with left needle carefully and pick the single dropped reverse stitch back up to the left needle. Now return the two lifted stitches to the left needle. Now you are ready to work together the next two pairs (front pair and reverse pair) to decrease a pair of stitches. Work the pair according to the chart instructions.
Grafting
Separate both sides of the cowl to two circular needles. Purl one round with the reverse side stitches. Reserve long enough tail of the front side yarn before cut off. Graft the sides together with kitchener stitch.

Dashes show the yarn behind the stitch layer and the arrows point to the direction for grafting.
