VANCOUVER SCARF
Materials:
Two skeins of multi-colored yarn, 4 ounces each - 380 yards total, approx. Example shown is knit with two skeins of 8515 by Yarn Hollow, Red Rocks and Spruce. (YARN B) One skein of solid color yarn (YARN A), 4 ounces, 190 yards approx.

Gauge: Not Applicable. Needle: Size 8 US (5 mm). Use straight needles, or circulars, whichever you prefer.
Notes:
This scarf pattern consists of four (4) rows of stockinette stitch between two rows of a solid-colored pattern stitch, creating a window frame around the multi-colored yarn. The scarf edge is finished by a knitted-on Icord edge, hiding the area where the yarns are climbing up the sides of the work when not being used. It may seem awkward to end a row by slipping three stitches and then start the next row with the yarn in an unusual place, but it works: the I-cord appears after two or three rows of knitting.
Start:
Cast on 4I stitches using your favorite cast on and YARN A (solid-colored yarn.) Sample is knit using long tale cast on. Set-up row: P 38, slip last 3 sts (to start I-cord edge). Do not break yarn. Row 1: With YARN B, K38, slip last 3 sts. Row 2: P38, slip last 3 sts. Move YARN A (solid color) up from the rows below, placing it over the working yarn so it is closer to the rows where it will be used again. Row 3: K38, slip last 3 sts. Row 4: P38, slip last 3 sts. Row 5: Pick up YARN A from underneath YARN B, K3 (I-cord edge), k3, \*drop next st off needle, unravel 4 rows, insert tip of right needle through the loop in the fifth row below, wrapping YARN A around the needle as if to knit and catching four strands from the unraveled stitches, and knit, k3 \*, repeat between \* across to last 3 sts, slip last 3 sts.

Row I1: Pick up COLOR A, k3 (I-cord edge), K1, \*drop next st off needle, unravel 4 rows, insert tip of right needle through the loop in the fifth row below, wrapping YARN A around the needle as if to knit and catching four strands from the unraveled stitches, and knit, k3 \*, repeat from \*, ending last repeat with kI, slip last 3 sts. Row 12: P38, slip last 3 sts. Repeat these 12 rows for as long as you care for the scarf to be.
Finish:
To finish the scarf, complete row 5 or row I1, then bind off while purling on the wrong side row, row 6 or rowI2.
Modification:
Change yarn colors each time you have the four rows of stockinet stitch to use up odds and ends of yarns that work well together color-wise. Throw in some handspun for a neat effect, or use different textured yarns for added interest. Use the pattern as a framework and add colors and textures as you like!
