Stitches
Puffst: (yo, insert hook into indicated space, yo, pullup long loop) 3 times, yo, pull through 6 loops on hook, yo, snugly pull through 2 loops on hook. PuffCombo: Puffst/ch2/Puffst in same st or sp /w: with BLO: back loop only fp: front post—insert hook from front to back and around post to front again. Fpdc is yo once and workoff asdc. bp: back post—-insert hook from back to front and around post to back again. Notes a) Puff stitches are slightly different from what you may be accustomed to, in that the loops are not all worked off at once. Please re-read and note the variation. b) Work proceeds in Rows, turning at end of each Row. Borders are added in ROUNDS after body is worked. c)Ch2 at beginning of Rows is the same as hdc. When you work in the hdc at end of next Row, you are working in the 2nd ch of the ch-2. Ch3 at beginning of Rows is the same as hdc+ch1. Again, when you work into hdc at end of next Row, you work in the 2nd ch of the beg ch-3. Ch4 at beginning of Rows is the same as dc+ch1. I find it useful to put a stitch marker in the chain that you will subsequently be hooking into on the following row, to mark where that chain is. d)Cushion sizing options vary from 14" to 20" (if you want a 24" cushion, you can add more borders of course). Instructions will be provided to adjust the sizing as needed.
INSTRUCTIONS
Size Notation: 14-16", use instructions as given. For sizes 18-20", use notation in brackets thus: work 14-16" {18-20"}. If you want, instead of changing the repeat for the 18-20" size, just make the 14-16" size and add more borders. It's easier and probably just as effective, I think. 12" Block changes at end of pattern.
Base
With Color A, Chain 42 {52} If you want a HUGE cushion (24"), then Chain 62 and add another repeat throughout. Or add more borders to the smaller ones. Row 1 (WS): Turn and sc in 41{51} chs. Turn. Finishing Instructions for Cushions
Finish Row 1 (RS): Ch1, sc in turning hdc,sk ch-1 sp,sc in next 39{49}sts, treating ch-2 sps as one st each, sk last ch-1 sp, sc in 2nd ch of ch-3. Turn. (41[51} scs) Finish Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. Finish ROUND 1: NOTE: Work in Round when you come to end of Row, continue around on RS. Ch1, 3 sc in turning st-mark middle st as corner; sc in next 39{49} sts, 3 scs in last sc—mark middle st as corner; work 39[49} scs along left side around posts at end of Rows-work fully around the posts, occasionally working 1 sc here and there to make the math work out. If you mark the middle of the side, and work 19{24} scs up to it, then sc in the middle marked area, and 19{24} scs after it, work will be moreeven. On side of last row, work 2 scs as start of new corner, marking second sc as corner sc, finish corner as turn to chained edge, sc in first st (that completes the corner neatly), then sc in next 39{49} chains, with last sc acting as first sc of next corner. Turn to right edge, 2 scs in end of first row—mark first sc as corner, again work 39{49} scs evenly along right edge at end of Rows. Work invisible join at end of last side in 1st sc made. (per side—41{51} scs, per corner—1 sc) Finish ROUND 2: Ilike to rejoin the same Color A and work a round of hdc (this helps get things up to size), with a ch2 over the corner st. That way, you have 41{51} hdc per side, and ch-2 corners. Then work an additional round. Finish ROUND 3: Continue and work dc round, working 5 dc in corners for count of 46 dc per side, which matches the finish of the 14" Puff Wheat Block for me. (At Round 19) Note: Subsequent Rounds will depend on how big you want your cushion to be, but you should strive to get the same number of stitches that you have per side on the FRONT CUSHlON you made. If you are going for 16", then you'll need more rounds yet, and so on. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/puff-wheat-12-afghan-block-and-cushion-extension Finishing: For size—if you have enough, then stop here and join the cushion back to cushion front by sc two front and back together, Ws facing, leaving one open edge, insert pillow form, sc two edges together. Finish with invisible join. Border: Join Color B w a sc in any sc, (hdc/sc) in same st, sk 1st, (sc/hdc/sc) in next st around. Corners are (sc/hdc/dc/hdc/sc) in one st. If you want a deeper border, work (sc/hdc/dc/hdc/sc) in one st, sk 2 sts around. Corners would then be (sc/hdc/3dcs/hdc/sc) in same st.
