Tristan's Triangles: A One-Skein Knitting Pattern for a Stretchy Bulky Weight Yarn Baby Hat

TRISTAN'S TRIANGLES

This pattern was written as a personal challenge to come up with a pattern that would utilize only one skein of Mirasol Sulka (55 yards). By the end of the pattern I had only a few inches of yarn left, just enough to weave in the ends!

SUPPLIES

Yarn: 1 skein of Mirasol Sulka (60% Merino, 20% Alpaca, 20% Silk; 50 grams/1.76 ounces; 55 yards/50 meters) Or a minimum 55 yards of any stretchy bulky weight yarn. Needles: US 9/5.5 mm circular or double-pointed knitting needles Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends Stitch markers (if needed)

ABBREVIATIONS

k: knit p: purl slp: hold the yarn to the back of the work and slip the stitch onto the needle purlwise m1: make one, backward loop method recommended ssk: slip, slip, knit X k2tog: knit two stitches together slp1-k2tog-psso: slip 1, knit 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch p2tog: purl 2 together Flip 2: flip the position of the next two stitches by inserting the right hand needle into both as if to knit together, pull them off and then put them back on the left-hand needle. This should reverse their positions.

SIZING

As written the hat comes out at 3-6 month baby size (roughly 12 inches in circumference and 5.75 inches tall). Increase or decrease the cast on by a multiple of 8 in order to alter the width of the hat. The height of the brim can be altered by doing additional repeats of rows 1 and 2, and the height of the hat itself can be increased by doing additional repeats of rows 14 and 15.

SKILL LEVEL

GAUGE

Need to be familiar with knitting in the round and increase and decrease methods. Roughly 3 stitches/inch in stockingnette stitch on size US no. 9/5.5 mm needles.

PATTERN DIRECTIONS

Cast on 56 stitches using German twisted stitch cast on, or any other stretchy cast on method. Join in the round.

BRIM

Round 1: \*k1, p1 repeat from \* to end Round 2: \*slp1, p1 repeat from \* to end Round 3: \*k1, p1 repeat from \* to end Round 4: \*slp1, p1 repeat from \* to end

TRIANGLE SETUP AND SHAPING

Round 5: \*k1, p1, k5, p1 repeat from \* to end This establishes the 8 stitch pattern repeat Round 6: \*slp1, pl, slp1, kl, slp1, k1, slp1, p1 repeat from \* to end Round 7: \*k1, p1, k5, p1 repeat from \* to end Round 8: \*slpl, pl, slp1, k1, slp1, kl, slp1, p1 repeat from \* to end Round 9: \*k1, p1, m1, ssk, k1, k2tog, m1, p1 repeat from \* to end Round 10: \*slp1, p2, slp3, p2 repeat from \* to end This round will have yarn running behind the 3 slipped stitches on every repeat. Having the yarn run too tightly will restrict the elasticity of your hat. Round 11: \*k1, p2, k3, p2 repeat from \* to end Round 12: \*slp1, p2, slp3, p2 repeat from \* to end Round 13: \*k1, p2, m1, slp1-k2tog-psso, m1, p2 repeat from \* to end

REPEATING ROUNDS

Round 14: \*slp1, p3, slp1, p3 repeat from \* to end Round15: \* k1, p3, k1, p3 repeat from \* to end Repeat rounds 14 and 15 five more times for a total of 25 rounds, then repeat round 14 one more time for round 26. If the hat appears short, knit a few more rounds until it looks long enough, ending on an even round.

TOP DECREASING

Round 27: \*k1, p2tog, p1, k1, p2tog, p1 repeat from \* to end Round 28: \*slp1, p2, slp1, p2 repeat from \* to end Round 29: \*k1, p2tog, k1, p2tog repeat from \* to end Round 30: \*slp1, p1, slp1, p1 repeat from \* to end Round 31: \*slp1-k2tog-psso, flip2, slp1- k2tog-psso, repeat until one purl stitch remains. At the end of round 31 you are going to be left with a final purl stitch that doesn't fit into the pattern repeat correctly. You can either leave it as-is or combine it with the first two stitches from the next row and do a final flip2, slip1-k2tog-psso, whatever your preference Cut yarn and thread through all remaining stitches. Pull tight and weave in the ends.
