Zombies Need Not Apply

Help keep those pulse points warm and try out some simple fair isle without having to simultaneously work any other techniques. Guy and girl versions of this pattern can easily be made with just a little duplicate stitch embellishment. Also included is how to cast on in $2\mathrm{x}2$ rib to better match the bind off and working unbroken stripes in ribbing. Originally published in MagKnits.com April 2006.

32 sts and : $32\;\mathrm{rows}=4^{\mathrm{{*}}}/\:10\mathrm{{cm}}$ in Stockinette Stitch on US size 3 needles.
Materials
Dale of Norway Baby Ull $[100\%$ merino wool; 190yd/175m per $1.750z/50g$ ball] Color A: 0090 Black, 1 ball; Color B: 0007 Grey Heather, 1 ball; Color C: 0010 White, 1 ball Needles: US 2 $(2.75\mathrm{mm})$ and Us size3 $(3.25\mathrm{mm})$ ) set of 4 or 5 DPNs Notions: Tapestry needle, small amount of yarn in similar gauge in pink or color of choice for bow (optional).

You can substitute any yarn that will give you the suggested gauge.

Stitch instructions
$2\,x\,2$ rib (worked in the round): k2, p2. Ribbing long tail cast on: Cast on 2 stitches in usual long tail cast on method. This creates two knit stitches. To make a purl cast on stitch start by holding the yarn in the usual manner. Pick up the strand of yarn on the index finger farthest away from you by coming from behind it. Move the needle towards the strand on the far side of the thumb and go under it coming from behind to catch it on the needle. Pull the needle back towards the index finger pulling the yarn through the loop around the index finger. Slip loop off index finger and tighten the stitch. Repeat one more time, two purl stitches cast on. Alternate between casting on two knit stitches and two purl stitches for $2\times2$ rib.
DIRECTIONS
With Color A and smaller needles, cast on 48 (51, 54, 57) sts. Place marker and join in the round, making sure not to twist. Work 2 rounds in $2\mathrm{x}2$ rib. Join Color B and knit 1 round even. Work next round in $2\mathrm{x}2$ rib. Change back to Color A and knit 1 round then work 2 rounds in $2\mathrm{x}2$ rib. NOTE: knitting 1 round even at each color change in the ribbing creates an unbroken line without disrupting the rib pattern. Change to larger needles and knitting every round, start working charts as follows. For size wS work 3 full repeats of Boy Chart A.For sizes $\mathsf{w M}/\mathsf{m S}$ , wL/mM work 3 (3) full repeats then work 1 (2) repeats of Section B of Boy Chart A. For mL work 3 full repeats of Boy Chart B. Switch to smaller needles and with Color A, knit 1 round. Work 2 rounds in $2\mathrm{x}2$ rib. Change to Color B and knit 1 round. Work 1 round in $2\mathrm{x}2$ rib. Change back to Color A and knit 1 round then work 1 round in $2\mathrm{x}2$ rib. BO off all sts in rib pattern.
FINISHING
For Girl version:
In pink scrap yarn, work bow in duplicate stitch as indicated on the Girl Duplicate Stitch Chart. Alternately, you can thread a piece of yarn through center bow stitch and tie into bow.
