Shawl's chart layout

The pattern consists of three charts. All charts represent the right side of the shawl. Chart 1 represents one half of the first section of the shawl. Charts 2 & 3 each represent one quarter of the second and third sections of the shawl. The chart layout is shown in the picture above. Chart 1 is repeated twice, and Charts 2 & 3 are repeated four times. All chartc have cimilar ctructura: Orange indicates the three edge stitches of the shawl. Blue indicates the center stitch for Chart 1 and the quarter stitch for Charts 2 and Chart 3. The stitch in the blue band is used once in the first section (Chart 1), three times in the second section (Chart 2), and three times in the third section (Chart3). White sections show the lace pattern which is repeated twice in the first section (Chart 1), four times in the second section (Chart 2), and four times in the third section (Chart 3).

Directions:

Cast on 3 stitches. Knit a 10 row ribbon in Garter Stitch (knit every row). Now, keeping the three stitches 0 needle, evenly pick up 5 stitches from the long edge of the ribbon and 3 stitches from the cast on edge. Complete the next 4 rows as follows: Row 1: Knit across. Row 2: k3, p5, k3. Row 3: k4, YO, k1, YO, k1, YO, k1, YO, k4. Row 4: k3, p9, k3 There are now 15 stitches on the needle and you are ready to begin Chart 1.

Pattern Notes:

On all even rows, unless noted otherwise purl the stitches that were knitted on the previous row and knit the stitches that werepurled. All Yarn Overs are purled on even rows. Knit the first and last three stitches of the shawl through row 207 on both the even and odd rows (the stitches shown in orange on the charts). When there is a decrease in the 3 stitch garter edge, it willbe reversed on the opposite side (knit 2 and make a Left Leaning Decrease would be worked as make a Right Leaning Decrease and knit 2 on the opposite side). See the Extras section for enlarged copies of Charts 1, 2 & 3. They may be cut out and then taped or glued together for easier reading. Knit rows 147-205 of Chart 3 according to the Shawl's Chart layout (Chart 3 orange section, [Chart 3 clear (white) section, blue center stitch] - 3 times, Chart 3 clear (white) section, Chart 3 orange section). Green numbers used in Chart 3 are showing a number of stitches to purl in a group of stitches. Knit row 206. Knit row 207 as follows: Knit 3 stitches. Double Yarn Over. \*Knit 8 stitches. Double Yarn Over.\* Repeat between the \* until 2 stitches remain on the left needle. Knit last 2 stitches. Purl row 208. Double Yarn Overs knit as explained: purl first Yarn Over, knit second Yarn Over. Bind off stitches as explained: \*Purl 2 together as one. Slip the stitch from your right needle to the left needle. Repeat between the \*s until 1 stitch is left. Cut the yarn (leaving enough yarn to finish & weave in the end), pull yarn through the last stitch & tighten it up.
