Fair Weather Socks
Thanks for joining me for this knitalong! The actual pattern instructions are pretty straightforward; feel free to substitute your favorite plain sock pattern if you have one that you prefer. This one is a simple top-down sock with a ribbed cuff. The fun part is going to be the stripes. Each round represents one mile hiked, and each color represents a different hiking region. Neutral rounds will separate the hiking stripes for each other. The ribbed cuff, heel, and toe are all going to be in the neutral color. I'll include my own stripe pattern for reference, but yours will likely be completely different. Fair Weather Socks by Emily Devlin Finished Size: Small (7" circumference), Medium (8"circumference), Large (8.5" circumference)
Materials:
Fingering weight yarn in several colors: one Neutral color and multiple colors to represent different types of hikes where you live. Size 1 or 1.5 needles in preferred method for working small circumference in the round. Map, compass, water bottle, and sturdy shoes. Safety first!
Gauge:
7.5 sts = 1" in stockinette stitch. I live in Portland, so hikes in town are purple, hikes in the Columbia Gorge are green, hikes on the coast are blue, and hikes anywhere else are chartreuse. I'm hoping to hike enough that I'll have mismatched socks, but feel free to make your socks match if that makes you happier. If hiking isn't your thing, but you'd like to participate, perhaps you could measure something else summery and active. Miles kayaked? The sky's the limit.

If you're on social media, please share photos of your socks in progress and/or your hikes and tag them #fairweathersocks. In the spirit of a progressive knit along, I'll include the leg instructions now, the heel instructions on June 24, and the foot instructions on July 24. Ready? Let's go! 1. C0 56 (60, 64) sts in neutral color. Join for working in the round. 2. Work in K1, P1 rib for 1" or desired length of ribbing 3. Take a hike! For example, I hiked Larch Mountain in the Columbia Gorge, which was 10 miles. 4. Change to the appropriate color to represent the hike you just took and knit as many rounds as miles hiked. For example, I will knit 10 rounds of green. 5. Knit one round in neutral color. 6. Take another hike. 7. Switch colors if appropriate, and work more rounds to reflect the next hike. For example, I hiked 4 miles in Portland on Mt. Tabor, so I will knit 4 rounds of purple 8.Knit one round in neutral color. 9. Continue in this manner, switching colors when appropriate, until sock measures 7" from cast on edge or desired length.
