A Dude's Sweater

Size: Small(Large) Finished measurements: 44 %" (49") chest (please note: if measured chest is 42"or smaller, make small; if chest measures 43"-47", make large. This sweater fits better with about 2" of 'give' space!) Materials: US 10 (6mm) straight needles, 16" & 21" (or longer) circular needles, 0ne 26" (65 cm) zipper with a white fabric backing, 5 stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, stitch holders. Yarn used: Knitpicks Wool of the Andes Bulky (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 137 yards/100grams per skein), 1 skein of Coal, 2 (3) skeins of Wine, and 6 (7) skeins of Bare. Gauge: 15sts = 4" using US 10 (6mm) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge Pattern in brackets ( ) are for large size. If only one number is given, then it applies to both the small and large size. PLEASE NoTE: the front of the sweater, where the zipper will eventually go when the sweater is finished, will often be referred to as the 'beginning' of the sweater. (Mainly referred to this when finishing the two front panels while working around the armpits.) Keep this in mind to avoid confusion!
Directions:
Cast on 165 (183) sts on longest circular needles using Bare. First row: K8, \*p1, k1\* across to last 8 (9) sts, k8 (p1, k8). (RS). Next row: Purl the purled stitches, knit the knit stitches; continue until piece measures 1.5" (4.5 cm). End in a WS row. Next row: Knit 1 row, increasing by 1 (2) sts evenly across. 166 (185) sts. From this point on, continue in Stst Work St st until piece measures 4 %" (11 cm). End in a WS row. Next row: k8 in Bare. Join Coal, knit to the last 8 sts, join bare, k8 in bare. Continue in St st, working the Bare sts in bare and the coal sts in coal for 1 %" (3 cm), ending with a WS row. Tie off coal yarn, and work just with the bare for 2 rows. Next row: k8 in Bare. Work chart #1 using Bare and Wine to last 8 sts, k8 in Bare. Continue working chart until all the rows are done. Next row: k8 in Bare. Join Coal, knit to the last 8 sts, join bare, k8 in bare. Continue in St st, working the Bare sts in bare and the coal sts in coal for 1 %" (3 cm), ending with a WS row. Tie off coal yarn, and work just with Bare for 1 %" (3 cm), ending with a WS row. Next row: k8 in Bare, k2 in Wine, \*k3 in Bare, k3 in Wine\* across to last 9 sts, k1 in Wine, k8 in Bare. Next row: purl across in white only. Next row: k8 in Bare, work chart #2 (2a) using Bare and Wine as follows: work sts 21-38 (23-43), pm, then 1-38 (1-43) three times (pm after each time), then 1-18 (1-20), pm, k 8 sts in Bare. Continue working chart #2 in this fashion until the entire chart has been worked, leaving the first and last 8 sts to be done in Bare. K 1 row in Bare, removing stitch markers along the way. Next row: p8 in Bare, p1 in Wine, \*p3 in Bare, p3 in Wine\* across to last 10sts, p2 in red, p8 in white. St st Bare for 1 %" (3 cm), ending with a RS row. On WS row, p40 (45), B0 3 sts, p80 (90), B0 3sts, p40 (45). The two sections of 40 (45) sts are your front panels, and the section of 80 (90) sts is your back panel.
For the two front panels:
Continuing in St st, work the first 8 sts from the front opening in Bare, the rest in Coal for 1 %" (3cm). Meanwhile, decrease 1 st at the armpit 2 (3) times (k2tog or p2tog) at the end of every other row. 38sts (42 sts).
On the back panel:
Continue in St st in Coal for 1 %" (3cm) decreasing at armpit on each side twice. 76 sts (86sts) Switch back to Bare. Work St st for 1 2/3" (4cm) Make 3 more decreases at the armpit per panel. 35 (38) sts for front two panels, 70 (78) sts on back panel. End with WS row.
Front panels:
Work 1st 8 sts in Bare, then chart #1 using Bare and Wine to end (armpit). Break Wine, leaving Bare to continue with the sweater. Ensure that the chart in this row co-ordinates with the first row of chart #1 thatyou'vepreviouslymade! oth panels continue in St st for 2 %"/6 %cm (3"/7.6cm) with Bare. End in a WS row At the beginning of each panel (where the zipper will eventually go) BO 6 sts, and (either knit or purl) to end. 29 (32) sts (Knit or purl) the next row. Next row: B0 6 sts, and (either knit or purl) to end. 23 (26) sts (Knit or purl) the next row. Keep remaining stitches on stitch holders.
Back panel:
Work chart #1 using Bare and Wine until entire chart has been worked. Break Wine, leaving Bare to continue with the sweater. Ensure that the chart in this row co-ordinates with the first row of chart #1 thatyou'vepreviouslymade! On back panel, continue in St st for 2 %"/6 ycm (3"/7.6cm) with Bare. End in a WS row. Next row: k29, BO 12, k to end. Purl the next row on both sides around BO sts. Next row: k23, BO 6sts at neck hole; on the other side of the neck hole, BO 6 sts then k to end. Purl the next row on both sides of neck hole. Break yarn.
To make shoulder:
1.) Hold RS together, facing each other, so that WS are facing out on all panels. 2.) Take the 1st st of each panel (at the neck hole or arm pit) and knit these two together. 3.) Take the next st of each panel and knit those two together. 4.) Pass 1st st over next st to bind of. 5.) Repeat steps 2-4 across until 1 stitch remains. 6.) Break yarn, pass through last stitch and pull, tie, and weave in ends. Do this for both shoulders.
Sleeves (make 2)
CO 36 (40) sts on straight needles in Bare. K1,p1 rib for 1.5" (4.5cm). Switch to St st from this point on. Next row: increase 1 stitch at each end. 38 (42) sts. Then, increase 1 stitch at the beginning and end of every 2d row, 3 (4) times. 44 (50) sts. Then, increase 1 stitch at beginning and end of every 4th row until you've got 60 (70) sts across.
MEANWHILE:
Work with Bare until sleeve measures 4 %" (11cm). Switch to Coal, continue for 1 %" (3 cm). Switch back to Bare, work 2 rows. Work Chart #1 using Bare and Wine. Switch back to Bare, work 2 rows. Switch to Coal, continue for 1 %" (3 cm). Switch back to Bare, work 4 rows. Work 1 row as follows: \*k3 in Bare, k3 in Wine\* across. Work 1 row in Bare, placing stitch markers after 1st 11 sts and before the last 11 sts Next row: work chart #2 using Bare and Wine as follows: for small, sts 28-38, then 1-38, then 1-11; for large, sts 30-43, then 1-43, then 1-14. Continue until entire chart is complete. Switch back to Bare, work 1 row. Work 1 row as follows: \*k3 in Bare, k3 in Wine\* across. (The red and white stitches should line up with thepreviousof thispatternrowmadeon the sleeve!) Switch back to Bare, work 3 rows. Next row: decrease 2 sts at end of each row. 56 (66) sts. Place a stitch marker here. Work the following decreases while continuing the color work (written below): decrease 2 sts every other row 2 times, then 4 decreases - 2 at each end - every 3'd row until 14 sts remain. (Large only, work 2 more rows in St st at end.) Switch to Coal, continue for 1 %"/3 cm. Switch to Bare, continue for 1 %"/4cm. Work chart #1 using Bare and Wine; make sure the pattern lines up with the last row of chart #1 that was worked in the sleeve. Switch back to Bare, and continue until all the decreases are done. BO.
Collar:
Pick up 30 sts along the back of the neck hole. Work a k2, p2 rib along, then pick up 2 sts at the end of the collar. Next row: Turn work, and continue in rib pattern, picking up 2 more stitches in the neck hole. Repeat until all the stitches along the neck hole have been picked up and worked into the rib pattern. nue the k2, p2, rib pattern until the collar on the shortest end reaches 5" (12 % cm.
To finish sweater:
Sew sleeves together from wrist to stitch marker. Join to armholes in sweater. Sew in zipper. Block where needed, and weave in ends. Pour yourself a White Russian and enjoy.
