Size: About 20" in circumference -- One size fits most adults since it's stretchy. Materials: ?Worsted weight yarn, about 160 to170 yards US Sizes 3 and 5 16" circular needles, or use size to obtain gauge US Size 5 double pointed needles, or size to obtain gauge 1 stitch marker (beginning of row), 7 contrasting markers (decreases), yarn needle Gauge: 5 stitches = 1" on size 5 needle Abbreviations: K=knit P=purl K2tog= knit 2 together st(s)=stitch(es) Notes: Beanie is worked in the round. At end of first round, join, being careful not to twist work, and place marker. There are 8 decreases on each decrease round. If needed, place markers at decreases on first decreaseround.

Pattern:

Using longtail method and smaller circular needle, cast on 96 sts loosely. Round 1: \*K2, P2; Repeat from \* to end of round. Repeat the last round, establishing a 2 X 2 rib, until the piece measures 1" from cast-on edge. Change to larger circular needle and begin working in stockinette st. ( Knit every st on every round.) Continue stockinette until work measures 5" from cast-on edge. First Decrease Round: \*K 10, k2tog; repeat from \* to end of round ( 88 sts total). Next Round: K even. Next Decrease Round: \*K 9, k2tog; repeat from \* to end of round (80 sts total). Next Round: K even. Next Decrease Round: \*K 8, k2tog; repeat from \* to end of round (72 sts total). Switching to double-pointed needles when necessary, continue alternating last 2 rows, decreasing 8 sts every other round, until 32 sts remain. (Reality Check: There will be 5 more Knit Even rounds and 5 more Decrease Rounds. The st totals afte each respective Decrease Round will be: 64, 56, 48, 40, and 32.) Decrease every round until 8 sts remain. (St totals following each round will be: 24, 16, 8.) Finishing: Break off yarn, leaving a 12" tail. With yarn needle, thread yarn tail through remaining 8 live stitches and pull tightly to close. Weave in ends and block.
