Three Rings of Knitting, Crafting, and Fun!

Candy Cane Scrubby by Misha Warbanski
When I saw a little, round, crocheted dish scrubby hanging in a friend's kitchen, I was determined to make a knit version. Using short rows, the scrubby knits up as a single piece (only one seam!), to create a double thickness pinwheel. The pattern is suitable for any jute, hemp, or heavy gauge cotton yarn.
Gauge
The gauge for this pattern is not particularly important. But for a denser scrubby choose needles one size smaller than recommended on the yarn label. Skill Level Beginner Size One size Finished Measurements 3.5" (9 cm) diameter.
Yarn
Shown in Darumaings, Cafe Bengal, 100% Jute (24m/25g skein). Main Colour (MC): Red, 1 skein Contrasting Colout (CC): CC1 White, CC2 Green, 1 skeineach Needles Pair US 7 (4.5mm) straight. Supplies Darning needle, dirty dishes
PATTERNNOTES
If you're new to short rows, don't be scared. Short rows mean you don't knit all the stitches on the needle. They're pretty essential for sock knitting, so consider this good practice. When you see "wrap and turn"? all you do is bring your yarn to the front as if to purl. Turn over your work, slip the first stitch of this short row and head back across. To avoid gaps: When you eventually have to knit back across the wrapped stitches, pick up the wrap and knit it together with the stitch.
INSTRUCTIONS
SEGMENT1
CO 12 stitches in colour A. Row 1 (RS): Knit 12. Row 2 (WS): Slip one, K9, slip 1 stitch, wrap and turn. (one stitch should remain on your left needle). Row 3: Slip wrapped stitch, K8, sl1, wrap and turn Row 4: Slip wrapped stitch, K7, sl1, wrap and turn. Row 5: Slip wrapped stitch, K6, sl1, wrap and turn. Row 6: Slip wrapped stitch, K5, sl1, wrap and turn. Row 7: Slip wrapped stitch, K4, sl1, wrap and turn. Row 8: Slip wrapped stitch, K3, sl1, wrap and turn. Row 9: Slip wrapped stitch, K2, sl1, wrap and turn. Row 10: K to the end, being careful to knit the wraps with their stitches.
SEGMENT2
Join colour B. Row 1 (Rs): K12 (again, being careful to pick up the wraps along with the wrapped stitches). Continue in colour B, working rows 2 through 10. Alternate colours and repeat pattern until you have 10 segments. (If you use three colours, make 9 segments). Bind off all stitches. Break yarn.
FINISHING
Using a darning needle sew up the seam to complete the circle and secure both ends. Hanging Loop: Make a crochet chain 20 loops long. Using a darning needle, loop it though a scrubby segment. Tie a knot in the chain. Hide it by pulling it through to the inside. Voila! For knitting's sake, go easy on the cheese grater!
