How to use a crochet pattern generator

Create a pattern, inspect its shape, and work through the stitches with PattGen.

A crochet pattern generator helps you turn a shape into stitch instructions. PattGen combines a 3D model converter with a pattern editor and an interactive stitch preview. You can start a new crochet pattern from a model, or open an existing pattern in the studio and make changes.

Choose a starting point

  • Learning the tools? Start with a free crochet pattern. The pattern and 3D preview let you explore how rounds form a shape.
  • Already have written instructions? Use the 3D pattern editor and adapt the instructions to PattGen’s supported notation.
  • Have a 3D shape? Open the model-to-pattern tool and import a GLB file.
  • Starting from a photo or an idea? AI-assisted workflows are available when the required service is enabled and your account has credits.

Preview and edit a written crochet pattern

The editor reads PattGen notation rather than arbitrary written instructions. Use the crochet stitch symbol reference to match its symbols to US and UK crochet terms. For example, X represents single crochet in US terminology, V an increase, and A a decrease.

These opening rounds from the free six-stitch ball pattern show the basic notation:

R1: MagicRing, 6X
R2: 6V
R3: 6(X, V)
  1. Open an example and choose Edit pattern to see its notation.
  2. Change the stitches or rounds, then return to the preview to inspect the resulting shape.
  3. Follow the pattern round by round when you are ready to crochet. The quick start guide explains the editor and pattern syntax in more detail.

Turn a 3D model into a crochet pattern

The local converter accepts GLB files. A simple, rounded shape is a practical first project: small details and narrow parts may need changes when represented by crochet stitches.

  1. Open Create a pattern and upload a GLB file, or select one of the example models.
  2. Review the shape and choose the available size, stitch and colour settings for your project.
  3. Generate the pattern, inspect the 3D preview, and read the round instructions before you begin making.

The preview helps you assess the shape. Your finished size also depends on yarn, hook size and tension, so make a sample and adjust the pattern when needed.

Start with a photo or a text idea

When an AI service is available, the creation flow can use a photo or text prompt as a starting point. Review the generated shape and pattern carefully: the result is a draft that may need editing and a physical sample.

AI-assisted requests use account credits. If that option is unavailable, you can still use a GLB file or an existing pattern with the free local tools. See crochet pattern generator pricing and membership for the current credit allowances.

Check your pattern before you crochet

  • Rotate the preview and look at the silhouette, increases and decreases.
  • Read the round instructions and check transitions between parts.
  • Choose yarn and a hook that work together, then make a small sample to check your tension.
  • Use the crochet video tutorials for unfamiliar techniques and the yarn colour reference when planning colours.
