Instructions
Construction:
The hat is made in two pieces. The top part is knit in the round, using three colours per round except at the very top of the crown. The base is a crocheted circle. The top is stuffed and then the pieces are stitched together.
Knit the top:
Colour key: R=Red, W=White, B=Blue : stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist work. Knit one row with blue Row 2: Start colourwork as follows: \* 2R, 1W, 2B, 1W, 1R, 1W, 2B, 1W \* repeat four times. R3-R14: work 12 more rows in the same pattern R15: Knit one row blue R16: Purl one row in blue. R17: Same as R2 R18: Start decreases: \* 2R, 1W, slip one, 1B, pass slipped stitch over, 1W, 1R, 1W, knit two together in blue, 1W \* repeat four times (36s) Break off blue yarn R19: \* 2R, slip 1, knit two together in white, pass slipped stitch over, 1R, slip 1, knit two together in white, pass slipped stitch over \* repeat four times (20s) R20: \* 2R, 1W, 1R, 1W \* repeat four times. Break off white yarn R21: \* 2R, slip two together as if to knit, 1R, pass slipped stitches over \* repeat four times (12s) R22: 12R R23: Knit two together in red all round (6s) Break off red yarn and pull through remaining stitches. Weave in ends and stuff until firm.
Crochet the base:
Crochet a circle as follows: R1: Make a foundation loop and work 8 double crochet into it. Work a slip stitch into the first stitch to join the round R2: Chain one, \* work one double crochet into the first and two double crochet into the next stitch \* repeat until end of round. Work slip stitch into first stitch to join the round R3:AsRow 2 R4: Chain one, \* work one double crochet into each of the first two stitches and two double crochet into the next stitch \* repeat until end of round. Work slip stitch into first stitch to join the round R5:AsRow 4 R6: Chain one, \* work one double crochet into each of the first four stitches and two double crochet into the next stitch \* repeat until end of round. Work slip stitch into first stitch to join the round. Break off yarn and weave in ends. Make sure top part is full of stuffing and stitch neatly to base around the fifth crochet round.
