Gauge

Ribbing
With size 7 needles and color 1, CO 43 (48, 48) stitches. Working back and forth on these stitches: Row 1: \*K3, p2; repeat from \* to last 3 sts, K3. Row 2 and all even rows: \*P3, K2; repeat from \* to last 3 sts, P3. Row 3: \*K1, P1, K1, P2; repeat from \* to last 3 sts, K1, P1, K1. Row 4: Repeat row 2. Repeat rows 3 and 4 four more times, then repeat row 3 once more. You will end on a wrong side row. Using knitted cast on, CO 27 (27, 32) stitches to the live end of the ribbing. At this point, you will need to transfer all stitches to smaller double pointed needles to join in the round (see instructions below).

Join to work in the round (70, 75, 80 sts total). To help avoid the gap at the join, pass the first stitch on the left needle to the right needle, then take the live stitch (this will now be the 2"d stitch on the right needle) and bring it over the first stitch (the one you just slipped) and over to the left needle. Be careful not to twist your knitting. You should now have the right side (k3, p2) facing outwards. Place marker here for start of the round (this will be off-set from your yarn end). Round 1: \*k3, p2; repeat from \* around. Round 2: \*k1, pl, kl, p2; repeat from \* around. Repeat these 2 rounds 2 more times. Change to stockinette (knit every row) and larger needles, distributing stitches evenly. For small size only : k2tog, k13, k2tog, k12, k2tog, k20, k2tog, k19 (66 sts). For medium size only: k2tog, k27, k2tog, k21, k2tog, k21 (72 sts). Work in stockinette until hat measures 2.75 (3, 3.25) inches from the top of the ribbing (you will measure only the stockinette portion). Join the 2"d color. Round 1: \*k1, slip 1; repeat from \* around. Work 5 (6, 6) more rounds in stockinette. Decrease Rounds For Small hat only: Round 1: \*k2tog, k4 ; repeat from \* around (55 sts).
