Stella of the Tundra!

thread: Curio by knitpicks, cotton thread, or any cotton thread or yarn you like tools: 1.8mm crochet hook, or size to suit your thread/yarn weight or crochet style additional tools: darning needle to weave in ends, parchment/waxed paper (if using template) or foil, blocking mat and pins, glitter, bead needle and beads (optional). Abbreviations: ch- chain dc- double crochet hdc- half double crochet sC- single crochet sl st- slip stitch tr- treble st dtr- double treble st hextr- 6 wrap treble if you are new to crochet, this site has some nice tutorials https://www.anniescatalog.com/crochet/content.html?scat id=368&c=0 blocking and starching: Feel free to use template. Just print either template (all snowflakes have a factor of 6 pronged geometry), place parchment/waxed paper over template on blocking mat, wet snowflake using water or starch of some sort (If you are not using template you may use foil to protect surfaces). Use pins to secure points/picots along the template lines. Pinning the shorter prongs first works well, place pin in one prong, find prong immediately opposite and pin that, then another prong and the opposite of that, continue in this fashion adjusting pins as you stretch the snowflake open. You may want to add glitter to make them sparkle. You may also use sewing thread (same colour as crochet thread) and bead needle to add beads to your snowflake after blocking. There are many starching techniques online...here is a link to a nice overview http://crochet.tangleweeds.com/stiffeners.html make a magic loop http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/09/demystifying-the-magic-ring/

make a magic loop Round 1: ch2, sc 11 inside loop ( a total of 12 sts), sl into second chain of first ch2 of round, pull loop as tight as you can, whilst keeping ring smooth. Round 2: ch3, dc in same st, 2dc in next sc, (ch3, 2dc, 2dc) repeat 4 times, ch3 sl st in 3rd chain at beginning of round -you should have 6 groups of 4dc pairs, see photo below.

Round 3: {2 sl st, ch 10, sc in same dc, sl st, in ch3 space-2sc, ch12, 2sc -, sl st] repeat to end, making the last sl st in the first sl st of round. See photo below.

Round 4: [in ch 10 loop of previous round- 1sc, 3hdc, 3dc, ch3, dc in 3d ch from hook, (ch3, dc in center of hole made from dc of picot from previous dc) 2 times, 3dc, 3hdc, 2sc- make 1sc (one in each of the 2 sl st from previous round), in chain 12 loop- 15 sc-, make 2sc (one in each of the 2 sl st from previous round)] repeat around, end with a sl st in the first sc of round. Break off yarn and weave in ends. You may block your snowflake now or rejoin yarn at the top hole of 2nd picot.

Round 5: rejoin to top picot in any 3 picot cluster, [2sc in top picot, ch 3, 4sc in next picot , sl st into following dc, ch4, dtr into 6th ch sc in 15 sc loop from previous round, ch3, dc in 3d chain from hook, (ch3, dc in loop made from previous dc) 2 times, ch1, sk 1sc, dtr, ch4, sl into last dc before picots on next point, 4sc in first picot, ch3, 2sc in top picot, ch5] repeat around, end with sl st into the first sc of round where you joined, cut tail, slip yarn through, weave in ends and block and starch if you like.

make a magic loop round 1: ch2, (tr, sc) 5 times, tr, sl st into 2nd chain of ch2 at beginning of round. Round 2: (ch15, sk tr, sc in sc of previous round) 5 times, end with ch6, hextr (wrap hook 6 times and pull through 2 sts -7 times, for example tr- hook wrapped 2 times with 3- 2st "pull throughs"), this places the hook at the top of the loop ready for round 3, as seen in photo below.

round 3: (ch8, dc in 3rd ch from hook, ch5, dc in hole in picot just made by dc, ch 3, dc in hole in picot just made by dc, ch5, sc in top of 15ch loop of round 2) repeat around, but for last sc, sl st into first ch in beginning of round instead. Round 4: (in ch 5 space- 2sc, 3hdc, 3dc-, ch3, 3 dc in first picot, ch3, in top picot- 1dc, 2tr, ch5, 2tr, 1dc-, ch3, 3dc in third picot, ch3, in next ch5 space- 3 dc, 3hdc, 2 sc, in next sc- sc, ch5, sc in sc from round 3 ) repeat around, ending with a sl st in first sc at beginning of round.cut tail, slip yarn through, weave in ends and block and starch if you like.

round 1: (ch3, dc, ch5, dc, ch3, sc) 6 times, but end with a sl st in the first chain at beginning of round. Round 2: 2 sl st in ch3 space, ch10, (sk ch5 space from round 1, dc in ch3 space, ch3, dc in next ch3 space, ch8) 5 times, sk 5 ch space, dc in ch3 space, ch3, sl st in 2ndchain of first ch10 loop. Round 3: sl st to top of ch 10 loop from round 2, [ch4, in ch 3 space from round 2- dtr, ch5, dtr, ch5, dtr, ch 4-, sc in ch8 space] 6 times, but end with sl st in top or first ch 10 space instead of sc. Round 4: 5sc in ch4 sp, [sc in dtr, complete the following in both ch5 space with a sl in the dtr between the 2 ch5 spaces - sc, hdc, dc, tr, dtr, ch 8 sc in 3rd st from hook, sc down the rest of ch, dtr, tr, dc, hdc, sc-, sc, 5sc in ch 4 space, sc, 5sc in ch 4 space] 6 times, but end with a sl st in sc at beginning of round. Cut tail, slip yarn through, weave in ends and block, and starch if you like. This flake is a little tricky, when blocking, as the points will end up on either side of the 6 sectioned template. The little "v" between the points is the 6 sectioned geometry.
