Cratchit Garter Stitch Wristers
Susan Newhall
This is a fingering weight side to side garter pattern, knit flat, with a short row thumb gusset and finished with a three needle bind off for a nearly seamless-looking wrister. If you like compression on your hands while you knit you will really enjoy these, they certainly look better than the stretchy beige crafter's wristers. You don't need to knit in a tube to get a comfortable fit. This pattern is suitable as a second project. The wrap and turn short row is fully explained and sources for a provisional cast-on and three needle bind-off are provided.

I call any fingerless wrister a Bob Cratchit Glove because they just look Dickensian to me. Bob Cratchit was Scrooge's ill-treated but saintly employee in A Christmas Carol. Bob was a bookkeeper charged with counting Scrooge's profits from his unspecified and unforgiving business practices. Recommended Yarn: 1 ball Rowan 4-Ply soft or equivalent weight yarn Needles: 2.25mm Size 1 US circular(length not important, I used 24") Notions: 1.Locking stitch marker to mark right side of work 2. Crochet hook and waste yarn(I use cotton crochet thread)for recommended provisional cast on.
Gauge: 8 st/inch 8 garter ridges(16 rows)/inch worked over garter rib.
Notes: This pattern is very flexible. Gauge can be adjusted easily to suit Pattern is easily adjusted for hand width. Directions for adjustment are in the pattern
Directions:
Cast on 50 stitches using provisional cast on. Lucy Neatby has a series of wonderful technique DVDs and an excerpt of her showing my preferred technique is available on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3J-sUx_whE
Knit first row. This is the wrong side row.
Mark the next row as the right side row. Work in garter 44 more rows (23 garter ridges from beginning). Stop after finishing Wrong side row. Hold rectangle across the back of the right hand. Your provisional cast on will be aligned with the pinkie side of your hand. The garter rectangle should reach to the middle of your first finger knuckle. If it doesn't, add more ridges. Be sure to end after finishing a wrong side row.

Turn.
AT THIS POINT ALL 50 STITCHES ARE ON THE LEFT HAND NEEDLE.
36. WS- knit all50 stitches, pick up and knit wraps together with stitches along the row. (stitches 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30 have wraps around their bases) 37 and all other rows. Knit 50 stitches Continue for same number of ridges and rows as in the section before the gusset. Be sure to end after a WS row. This will be 44 more rows (23 garter ridges after the thumb gusset) ending after a WS row if following this pattern slavishly. Unzip provisional cast on. Here is another wonderful Lucy Neatby video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNFXO8MH2z0 and place on another needle of similar size. You will have only 49 stitches on this needle if you used the crochet cast on that Lucy neatby demonstrates. Using your tail of working yarn (not the waste yarn), pick up one extra stitch at the end to make up 50 stitches. Be sure you have 50 stitches Holding right sides together and using the other end of your circular needle or a same sized straight needle, work a three-needle bind off over all fifty stitches. A three needle bind-off can be found here: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/casting-off scroll down to the technique. Turn right side out and, voila! one garter stitch wrister. Repeat for second wrister.
Enjoy warm hands next winter. And tell Scrooge to get off your back,
