notes:

the scarf consists of 3 parts: the neck part with a simple $3\mathrm{x}3$ rib stitch and the two tails in cockle shell pattern. after a provisional cast on, the shawl starts with the ribbed neck part and continues to one of the ends. then the second tail is knit from the provisional cast on edge. if you are using a variegated yarn with a long color repeat, I suggest knitting each of the 3 parts from its own ball of yarn. at least make sure not to have to change to a new ball of yarn while

knitting one of the cockle shell tails to avoid abrupt color changes in the patterned part of the shawl. there is a 3 stitches wide edge on both long sides of the scarf consisting of slipped and knitted stitches. it results in a very nice, i-cord like, firm edge which helps the cockle shell tails hold their shape. though, you have to knit the edge stitches very loosely, lest they will contract the fabric!

instructions:

(I love Judy's Magic Cast On - see Knitty.com, Issue Spring'06 - executed on 2 circular needles, where I then start knitting on one side with one of the circulars while the other circular just stays in place. later I pick the second circular and start knitting to the second side.) knit the first row as follows: WS: sl yf, k1, sl yf, k45, sl yf, k1, sl yf (resulting in a garter ridge) continue in ribbed pattern as follows: RS: kl, sl yf, kl, [p3, k3] 7 times, p3, kl, sl yf, k1 WS: sl yf, kl, sl yf, [k3, p3] 7 times, k3, sl yf, k1, sl yf (remember to always knit the k1 of the 3 edge stitches very loosely!!) repeat this 2 ribbing rows for about 12-14 inches (30-35cm), ending with a RS row. about this pattern:

Rhinemaidens are the three water-nymphs in Wagnerian mythology that are to guard the Rheingold, a treasure which can be made in to a magic ring whose bearer will rule the world. the maidens' joy in the gold derives from its beauty alone, even though they know its latent power. the mermaids' fishy tails are represented in the stitch pattern of this scarf. wearing the scarf wrapped ringlike round your shoulders, you may decide for yourself if you wish to rule the world or just want to enjoy the warmth and beauty of your knitted item. inspired by a Seafarer's Scarf" (Christmas-at-Sea program, www.seamenschurch.org) seen some time ago at a friends', I wanted to make one of these unusually shaped scarves that fit so snugly round the neck. the original pattern calls for garter stitch tails, but I adapted a cockle shell pattern to achieve a rippled, three dimensional structure.
