November Rain & Rivulets Cowl By Sherri Matteo
Since we are hoping for rain, rain and more rain in California after several years of severe drought, I am having fun creating rainy patterns that may serve as a knitted rain dance! This cowl combines beaded raindrops and a zig-zag Aran pattern to create the look of a small stream of flowing water. You may use any weight yarn, though the measurements, chart repeats, gauge and needle size will differ, depending on how you would like the cowl.
Abbreviations:
bo: bind off c1b: place one st on a cn and hold to back c1f: place one st on a cn and hold to front co:cast on cn: cable needle k: knit k2tog: knit 2 together kf&b: knit front and back ktbl: knit through the back loop p: purl ptbl: purl through the back loop PB: place bead (see Notes) rs: right side sl1 wyib: slip one st with yarn in back ssk: slip first st knitwise, slip second st knitwise, knit the 2 together by bringing left needle through the front loops on the right needle st: stitch sts: stitches ws: wrong side yo: yarn over
Notes on knitting cabled stitches in this pattern:
There are several YouTube videos for cabling without a cable needle, which takes the sts off the knitting needle and then reorganizes them back to the needle. This works best with yarn that isn't slippery so live sts don't “drop" once they are removed from the needle. For this pattern, I used a simple bobby pin technique for left and right leaning cables without a cn. For left leaning, use a small bobby pin to take the first st off the left needle and let it hang in the front while you p the next st. Pull up the bobby pin and make sure the st is not twisted, place it back on the left needle and ktbl. For right leaning, use the bobby pin to take the first st off the left needle and let it hang in the back while the second st is ktbl. Pull up the bobby pin, make sure the st is not twisted, place it back on the left needle and p or k it (depending on the cable pattern.) So simple, fast and no pointy cns sticking into the work!

Pattern Specs & Notes:

Yarn: 1 skein (400 yds) of Madeline Tosh Vintage in Tart Gauge: 16 sts and 26 rows = 4" / 10 cm Needle size: US 6 / 3.75 mm circular needle or size to get gauge; Crochet hook 1.15 mm (Size 10); Beads: 90 beads of Miyuki Size 6 in S/L Crystal (Item #6- 9149S-TB) Stitch markers
Placing a Bead on a stitch:
Beads are placed on WS rows using the crochet hook\* method. Purl to the st represented by B on the chart, place bead on crochet hook, insert hook on front part of stitch removing it from the needle and slide bead over stitch; place stitch back on left needle and purl the stitch. There are lots of excellent videos on YouTube for different beading methods and mattress st sewing.
