Round 1: CO 4 sts using the Knit Cast On method. Round 2: BO 6 sts using the Knit Bind Off method Repeat until you have bound off all stitches. (You should have 70 total picot points) See“What is a Picot Bind Off?" below for more information onhow to use theKnit Cast On andBind Offmethods. Finishing the Cowl: Weave in ends using a blunt tapestry needle -- if your tapestry needle is too pointed, you risk piercing the yarn and causing a split. Block to desired dimensions.

What is a Picot Bind Off?

A picot bind off resembles a serrated edge of a knife and is made up of little points or "picots" (pronounced: pee-koes). The word "picot" comes from the French piquer meaning “to pierce". A picot edge is a decorative, but also stretchy, bind off and is perfect for a garment like this cowl. The steps of the picot bind off are comprised of two well-known knitting skills: the Knit Cast On and the Knit Bind Off.

Knit Cast On

Step 1: Insert your needle into the stitch as if to knit. Step 2: Knit the stitch but do not slip it off onto the right-hand needle. Step 3: Place the stitch onto the left-hand needle. You should have one more stitch cast on now. Repeat steps 1-3 4 times to cast on 4 new stitches.

Knit Bind Off

Step 4: Knit two stitches Step 5: Slip the first stitch (the one closest to your hand) over the second stitch (the one nearest the end of the needle). Step 6: Knit a stitch. Step 7:Repeat step 2. Repeat steps 6 and 7 6 times to cast off 6 total stitches. Step 8: Put the last stitch on the right hand needle back on the left. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 until all stitches are bound off.
