Needles:
After the popularity of the Breast Cancer Awareness hat, I knew there needed to be a hat that shows appreciation for our military. All who put their lives on the line for the freedom of their country deserve the full support of those of us who benefit from that sacrifice. 7 to 8 stitches per inch on the larger needles.

Notes:
Ribbing circumference: 18" Hat height: 91/2 -10"
Measurements:
This hat expresses our appreciation and support for the men and women who serve our country now, and those who have given of themselves in the past. Wearing this hat, we act as "cheerleaders" for our military forces. When changing colors, leave about a four inch tail of each color to be tied together. After tying the knots, trim the tails to about one inch.

Instructions
Cast On:
Using the size 2 circular needle and the blue yarn, cast on 160 sts. Join, being mindful not to twist the stitches. Place marker. Knit 3 rounds with blue.
Ribbing:
Join white and follow the Corrugated Rib chart If you like to carry one color in each hand, it may be easiest to carry the purling color in the right hand and the knitting color in the left.
Body:
Switch to black and knit 3 plain rounds, increasing 20 stitches (to 180 stitches) in the third round. This can be done by increasing one stitch after every 8th stitch. Change to the larger size circular needle and work the Ribbon chart. Drop the black yarn and pick up red; knit 2 plain rounds red, 2 plain rounds white and 2 more plain rounds red. Using the Body charts start with row 1 in Chart A and continue to row 1 in Chart B. Repeat row 1 in Chart A, and row 1 in Chart B to complete one round around the hat. For the next round, move up to row 2 and follow the Chart A, Chart B sequence, repeating once for each row. Move up another row for each new round and the words "Support Our Troops" will form twice around the hat. Work two rounds red, two rounds white, two rounds red, and three rounds black. Work the Ribbon chart again to complete the body.
Crown:
Drop black, pick up white and knit the Crown chart. Important! The rounds for the crown begin in the center of the chart at the arrowrather than at thecentered double decreases. To work the centered double decreases, slip 2 stitches together knitwise, knit next stitch and pass 2 slipped stitches over the knitted stitch.
Finishing:
When the decreases are finished, break the yarn, leaving an 8-10" tail. Run this tail through the last few stitches several times, gathering them up. On the inside of the hat, knot together pairs of ends where color changes occurred. Trim to about an inch and leave them hanging. They will felt together when worn if the yarn is 100% wool, (not superwash wool). If a washable wool or acrylic yarn is used, it is best to weave in the ends. At the lower edge, to prevent ends from showing outside the hat while worn, hide the ends by weaving them in. To block the hat, begin by wetting it. Press all the excess moisture out with a towel and shape the hat over a bowl or plate to dry. D:L
